Look at me! Another Princesses Read??? Yes, that is right! Mandy is back at it, and we’re going to try the every other Saturday thing until I get more bursts of inspiration. I figured I would tackle something new…I was going to go with another Princes’s Read, and Prince Adam was giving me the side eye, but I started thinking about a certain other Disney man in that classic. Therefore, this week, we will be featuring…
Gaston!
Before we get any further, if there is anything that you ever want to know about Gaston, just watch this video, and you’ll know it all:
“Gaston” is one of my favorite Disney songs ever, because I mean, I dare you to say that this song is not catchy at all. He’s also one of the scariest villains out there with just how realistic he is in his arrogance, his pompousness, his highly inflated ego, and just general demeaning of women. So, yeah, there’s that.
Besides all of those lovely attributes, the man loves himself. He loves pretty things – and people – and he will do anything to have what he wants. He is obsessed with himself, he treats everyone like crap, and is super super fit. Like, how does that man work out?? He loves hunting and spitting and antlers.
What YA books would be hanging on Gaston’s mantel?
Hunted by Meagan Spooner
Okay, you’re sitting there going, Mandy, this is CHEATING. How is a YA telling about Beauty and the Beast included in Gaston’s list? WHERE IS YOUR CREATIVITY? I’m with you, but I couldn’t NOT include this one. Beauty, in this story, is a hunter. Like, a really good one that Gaston would fall even more in love with. Beautiful and a hunter??? Gaston just found himself in Yeva. And there is a “Gaston” in this book, but he’s actually super nice and lovable and totally handsome – which Gaston would totally agree with that he is, period.
Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan
So, clearly, a man like Gaston would like action, adventure, some fights, and drama. Percy Jackson clearly has that, but do you know what else it has – ARES. That’s right, I totally imagined Gaston as Ares when I was reading this series. DOES HE NOT FIT PERFECTLY? Both men clearly like war and fighting and and hunting and themselves. I’m sure Gaston would think the action and the adventure is cool, but he would biding his time until Ares came back on the scene.
The Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo
Again, Gaston is definitely a fantasy fan, since they are always full of action and adventure. Plus, I feel like he would just be so amazed by magic. He totally was intrigued by the magic mirror thing when he spotted it. I’m not really sure how he would feel about a girl savior (totally think the man is about as antifeminist as it comes). However, I totally think he would love how the Darkling wants to use Alina for her power. I feel he would be like, OOH THIS IS GENIUS. I AM IN.
A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas
So, clearly, the Beast got the best of Gaston and eventually found himself on the losing end of Belle’s affection (ARE WE SHOCKED). So clearly, he would not enjoy the Beast getting the girl, which happened in the first book of the series. SPOILERS: so when Tamlin goes crazy in this book and loses Feyre, Gaston would totally be SO excited since he would feel validated. Plus, I totally feel like he would fancy himself as a buffer Rhysand.
A book Gaston would NOT pick up
The Cure for Dreaming by Cat Winters
Feminist as all get-up plus seeing men as monsters? Especially men like Gaston? Yeah, Gaston is saying the biggest no thanks.
Want to read more about Gaston?
Well, clearly, you can read about a nice Gaston in Hunted. I’m not quite sure if he appears, but a Tale as Old as Time by Liz Braswell is supposed to be another extension of the movie.
Oh he definitely appears in Tale As Old As Time as he is just as twisted – pun not intended. I also think you’ve picked some of the best books for him. I can imagine him cheering on the Darkling to use Alina’s power or even joining forces with Alina to help bring down the Darkling so he can get a hold of his power. Even so, considering the end of Ruin and Rising, he’d be thwarted and thrown right back to the beginning – maybe even more bitter than before!
I also prefer his song a lot more now I’ve seen the live action film. I think that version has a little more gusto and some clever foreshadowing. Secondly, I find LeFou’s additions hilarious!

Oooooooooh, he does?? I’m so excited. And thank you, Emma! You’re my Beast and the Beast guru, so I’m super excited you think I got it with him. But yes!
I do agree. I wanted to get the live action version, but they didn’t have the video of it. But I super agree. LeFou was much greater in that one, and Luke Evans was so feeling it.

If guru is a very subtle way of saying I have an undying love for and ultimately devour anything Beauty and the Beast then thank you!

This is so awesome. There is something about Gaston that I just love! The choices you made are all so perfect especially The Cure for Dreaming! He is definitely not feminist!

I absolutelt adore Gaston! Although in the animation and live action movie (mostly the live action), I wanted him dead 😂 I was watching it in the cinema and I felt such relief and triumph when he fell and died lolol I should read all those especially the Grisha trilogy 😫😫 it’s sitting on my bookshelf gaining dust because I can’t prioritize for shit 😂😂

Ahahahaha it’s so amusing how that happens. You want him dead but you kind of totally love him at the same time? But yesssss. And lol, I finally read them myself last year? Very late last year. There are so many books out there that it’s so easy to get distracted. D: Hopefully you enjoy them when you get to them!

Oh I didn’t know he appeared in Tale As Old As Time! That sounds exciting 🙂 I’d love more Gaston and definitely more Gaston music numbers!
Amazing picks, Mandy, these are definitely Gaston material and I laughed so hard at the Cat Winters book xD Gaston and feminism? Uh-uh. Women shouldn’t be reading, they should be taking care of the house and cooking dinner for their man!
Wonderful post, hon ❤

Yesssssssss. I wasn’t too sure either, but I’m excited. Gaston should have definitely had more songs. 😉
And thank you! But yesssssssss. I’m like oh gosh, that man would be running for the woods. I think he would take his chances with the wolves? Thanks so much, Sophie!! ❤

BAHAHA this tag is my favorite so far 🙂 I love Gaston in the animated film. The Cat Winters choice was perfectly worded and that’s the one YA book by her I still haven’t read 🙂

Yep. His singing voice in the animated film is just amazing, although Luke Evans did pretty good in the live action one too 🙂

Oh, this is funny. Gaston doesn’t know how to read!

Lol, omg, so true. We’ll just pretend these are all picture books? I should have done that. XD

Haha yes! I’m also thinking he’d like audiobooks narrated by himself, but then it would require reading so it’s a catch 22.

Ahahahaha, it really would. XD He would probably just change it all around and just make up his own story about him hunting and being beautiful.

That! We should make it happen.

This was a truly great list Mandy! I can definitely picture Gaston wanting to read these!
There is just one tiny problem…
I don’t think he will get past the fact that none of these novels have pictures XD\
“How can you read this? There are no pictures?”
XD Great post!

Ahahahaha thankies! XD I should have given him Wires and Nerves? He could just look at all the wonderful pictures of our crew. And be jealous of Thorne.
