#POLL: How Many Books Do You Read at a Time?

gimme more fox GIF by So You Think You Can Dance

It’s simple math. There’s an ARC you need to review for next week, a buddy read you promised—promised—you would finish on time, a new release you can’t tear your eyes off of and then this book that … look, it’s under 300 pages. It barely even counts

And voila, you’re pulling a balancing act of three plus books and fending off the questions of

❓ how do you keep the plot straight?
❓ how do you remember all characters?
❓ how do you choose which of alll those books to read

Of course, you could avoid all that and go the easy route. Read one book at a time! It’s classicYou can focus all your emotions, your senses, on one journey. (I’ll admit it here and now, that’s the way I prefer to go unless I’m really pressed.)

I ask you now  . . .

which do you prefer?

  1. I only read one book at a time as I like to completely immerse myself in the world and the story but I do often have a second book on the go on audio. I do try to make sure they’re very different genres though.

  2. There was a time when I only read one book at a time but nowadays I read two. One physical book and one audiobook. I get confused easily so I always pick two different types of books. So if I’m reading some fantasy as a physical book, then I pick something like contemporary etc as my audiobook. And why two books? I can listen to audiobooks while I’m working and that way I can read whenever I feel like it, since I don’t have time to read physical books at work!

  3. To be honest, I used to read one book at a time, but about a month ago I tried reading three books at the same time and dividing them in four or three sections, and it’s been incredible! I get so distracted, and I feel at doing that and then later write all my thoughts in a post-it it’s been so helpful and I actually read even more and faster!

  4. I have seen people with a long list of currently reading. That’s not for me, but I am usually listening to one book and reading one book at a time. I think juggling multiple books is the same as watching multiple TV shows. We could always keep the plots straight there, right? I just would rather work through a book and then start another, because I am eager to see how it ends.

    1. Oh gosh yes, I have no idea how people handle reading more than four books at a time. I’ve done two or three sometimes (and it was a huge struggle, and it was usually a combination of school books and ARCs) but more than four? Oof, I could never keep all those plot lines straight. And like you say, I get too involved in one book and want to know how it ends.

  5. The more the merrier! *lol* I have a tendency to read at least 4 – 6 books at the same time and I’m really happy with this. I’m a huge mood reader and the opportunity to change books is very important for me. Admittedely when I read 6 books it gets hard to finish one of them, but as long as it are 4 or 5 I’m doing fine. XD

      1. To be entirely honest I don’t know how I do it. I guess I’m just good with names, faces, locations, numbers… oh well, let’s just say I’m good at remembering? I suppose I’ve an eidetic memory of some sorts. *lol*

  6. I’m usually reading 2-3 books at the same time. One on my Kindle and 1-2 physical books.

I’ve never really had a problem remembering the plot and characters or mixing them up. It’s like, as soon as I start reading the book I get transported to that settings immediately. 🙂

At the moment I’m actually reading 6 books… but only because I’ve been picking up books, starting them, not enjoying and putting them back down… lol

    1. I’m impressed by your remembering skills. Something I could never do! I like to stay with one book at a time, that’s definitely my comfort zone.

I’m gasping a little in shock at six books, but okay. You’re not totally reading them, more picking them up and down. *breathes out* 😂

  7. I think I PREFER to read one at a time. My scattered brain has a hard time keeping storylines/characters straight. Occasionally (now being one of those times) I can end up with 2-3 books at a time, but that is like the max for me (and I don’t do it often).
