It’s simple math. There’s an ARC you need to review for next week, a buddy read you promised—promised—you would finish on time, a new release you can’t tear your eyes off of and then this book that … look, it’s under 300 pages. It barely even counts.
And voila, you’re pulling a balancing act of three plus books and fending off the questions of
❓ how do you keep the plot straight?
❓ how do you remember all characters?
❓ how do you choose which of alll those books to read
Of course, you could avoid all that and go the easy route. Read one book at a time! It’s classic. You can focus all your emotions, your senses, on one journey. (I’ll admit it here and now, that’s the way I prefer to go unless I’m really pressed.)
one book at a time. This week i decided I’ll read two books simultaneously. I didn’t even open the second book!

Same here Yesha! I can’t keep two plot lines in my head.

I’m always reading at least 3 books at a time.

I’m impressed! I can never keep the plots straight

I’m mostly reading around 3-4 books at the same time! It’s fairly manageable for me since they’re mostly in different forms (manga, audiobook, fiction, non-fiction) 😀

Hey Pam! That does sound like it makes it more manageable. Do you purposefully keep up a selection of manga/audiobook/fiction or does it just happen that way?

Not really on purpose! I’m such a moody reader so I tend to gravitate towards different formats and this is almost always the case 😀

As long as we get our fill of books, right?

I think I tend to stay around 2 at a time lately plus a Bible study book? It varies

Two sounds manageable! I know I can’t handle more than one at a time. If I start a second book, I end up abandoning the first. 😂

I only read one book at a time as I like to completely immerse myself in the world and the story but I do often have a second book on the go on audio. I do try to make sure they’re very different genres though.

Same here on immersing myself into the world! I haven’t gotten into audiobooks, sadly.

There was a time when I only read one book at a time but nowadays I read two. One physical book and one audiobook. I get confused easily so I always pick two different types of books. So if I’m reading some fantasy as a physical book, then I pick something like contemporary etc as my audiobook. And why two books? I can listen to audiobooks while I’m working and that way I can read whenever I feel like it, since I don’t have time to read physical books at work!

I hear this combo often, it’s really smart! Maybe I should try it, audiobook with physical book? It seems like a good way to keep reading when I’m moving around.

That has definitely helped me to get more reading done!

To be honest, I used to read one book at a time, but about a month ago I tried reading three books at the same time and dividing them in four or three sections, and it’s been incredible! I get so distracted, and I feel at doing that and then later write all my thoughts in a post-it it’s been so helpful and I actually read even more and faster!

Wow! I’m not going to lie, that sounds like way too much work for me, but I’m glad you found something that works for you. I can’t believe sectioning books actually helps you read faster!!

I have seen people with a long list of currently reading. That’s not for me, but I am usually listening to one book and reading one book at a time. I think juggling multiple books is the same as watching multiple TV shows. We could always keep the plots straight there, right? I just would rather work through a book and then start another, because I am eager to see how it ends.

Oh gosh yes, I have no idea how people handle reading more than four books at a time. I’ve done two or three sometimes (and it was a huge struggle, and it was usually a combination of school books and ARCs) but more than four? Oof, I could never keep all those plot lines straight. And like you say, I get too involved in one book and want to know how it ends.

No more than two. Ok, sometimes a third. But one I keep for the day time and the other for the night time!

One for day and one for night… This is a new one! Why would you split that way? I’m intrigued.

I read during commutes during the day and I read before bed, usually a different book!

The more the merrier! *lol* I have a tendency to read at least 4 – 6 books at the same time and I’m really happy with this. I’m a huge mood reader and the opportunity to change books is very important for me. Admittedely when I read 6 books it gets hard to finish one of them, but as long as it are 4 or 5 I’m doing fine. XD

Okay, I neeeed to know how you keep those plots straight. I would forget character names, locations, etc. I’m both impressed and in awe!

To be entirely honest I don’t know how I do it. I guess I’m just good with names, faces, locations, numbers… oh well, let’s just say I’m good at remembering? I suppose I’ve an eidetic memory of some sorts. *lol*

I’m envious. I even have times where I blank out on the plot of the book I’m reading — the *one*, singular book I’m reading.

I’m usually reading 2-3 books at the same time. One on my Kindle and 1-2 physical books.
I’ve never really had a problem remembering the plot and characters or mixing them up. It’s like, as soon as I start reading the book I get transported to that settings immediately. 🙂
At the moment I’m actually reading 6 books… but only because I’ve been picking up books, starting them, not enjoying and putting them back down… lol

I’m impressed by your remembering skills. Something I could never do! I like to stay with one book at a time, that’s definitely my comfort zone.
I’m gasping a little in shock at six books, but okay. You’re not totally reading them, more picking them up and down. *breathes out* 😂

Usually more for me! I usually have 1 audio book and either 1 e-book or physical book. But I’m bad at managing at times and can have up to 3 books I’m reading lol

I feel like I’m in the minority by reading one book at time. 😂 I need to up my book game. Up to three books is good!

THE MORE THE MERRIER! I try to only stick to a maximum of 3 books at a time, but I just tend to be reading more than one at a time without realizing it ha-ha!

It’s a good way to get to all the books on your TBR! We need to find all the ways we can to keep up with the amazing new releases.

I actually got super called out by this post!
I was going to write one, but I found that I’m actually reading three; one audiobook, one digital book, and one physical book!

I think I PREFER to read one at a time. My scattered brain has a hard time keeping storylines/characters straight. Occasionally (now being one of those times) I can end up with 2-3 books at a time, but that is like the max for me (and I don’t do it often).

Same here, Samantha! I don’t enjoy books as much if I read more than one at a time. I’d rather really enjoy something than get a lot of books in. But that can change when I have ARC reviews coming up or a buddy read.
