In case you missed it, last week, we announced that we are doing the Nightmare Before BPR read-a-thon again—a read-a-thon based on prompts from The Nightmare Before Christmas. I’m so super pumped for this read-a-thon, and I’ve been setting some books aside for the past few months so I can binge them allllll. Here are some of the books that I’m going straight for this month—at least, right now, but knowing me, I’m going to throw this TBR out the window when I see all the spooky books that you know pubs are going to drop come September.*
*hence the timing of this read-a-thon!
The Prompts
👻 Zero – A Book with Ghosts
👻 Doctor Finklestein – A Spooky Book with an Eccentric Character i.e. like a Mad Scientist
👻 Lock, Shock, and Barrel – A Spooky Book with a Gang/Crew
👻 The Citizens: A Book with Any of the Following – deformed monsters, ghosts, ghouls, goblins, zombies, demons, mummies, vampires, werewolves, and witches
👻 This Is Halloween: Spookiest Book on your TBR
👻 What’s This: A Book with a Mystery
👻 Halloween Town: A book with a spooky town
👻 Sally: A Spooky Book with a Voice of Reason Character
👻 Mayor of Halloween Town: A Book that Has Two Faces – either two main characters, two separate plots, or one big plot twist
👻 Jack, the Pumpkin King: A Book Where a Character Has Skeletons
👻 Jack’s Lament: A Book with Sad Overtones
👻 Oogie Boogie: A Spooky Book You’re Taking a Gamble On
👻 Sally’s Song: A Spooky Book with a Love Story Featured
👻 Kidnap The Sandy Claws: A Book with a Disastrous Plan
👻 Santa Claus: A Non-Spooky Book for a Palette Cleanser
My TBR
Jack, the Pumpkin King: A Book Where a Character Has Skeletons
The Raven’s Tale by Cat Winters – seeing as last year, I did an Edgar Allen Poe graphic novel for this prompt, might as well do another Poe book?
This Is Halloween: Spookiest Book on your TBR
Contagion by Erin Bowman – space = scary. Space with monsters = even scarier.
Kidnap The Sandy Claws: A Book with a Disastrous Plan
Teeth in the Mist by Dawn Kurtagich – one character’s plan is to literally run away from home and go to a haunted house. I’m calling this a disastrous plan right here and now.
Mayor of Halloween Town: A Book that Has Two Faces – either two main characters, two separate plots, or one big plot twist
The Best Lies by Sarah Lyu – this book is told in alternating timelines and about choosing which side of the story is right – your friend’s or boyfriend’s. Lots of twos. Also this looks so unscary, lol.
Jack’s Lament: A Book with Sad Overtones
House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig – this will probably be my first book I tackle because it sounds like everything I have ever wanted please and thank u.
The Citizens: A Book with Any of the Following – deformed monsters, ghosts, ghouls, goblins, zombies, demons, mummies, vampires, werewolves, and witches
Season of the Witch by Sarah Rees Brennan – Sabrina used to be my ultimate jam, and I watched the first episode of this new edition and it wasn’t bad. Figured I would give this a shot.
Lock, Shock, and Barrel – A Spooky Book with a Gang/Crew
Ghosted in L.A. comic – the art looks pretty and cool, and a ghost gang sounds pretty legit.
Oogie Boogie: A Spooky Book You’re Taking a Gamble On
Conspiracy of Ravens – I haven’t heard anything about this at all, but the art looks cool and I’m always down for a spookish mansion.
Sally: A Spooky Book with a Voice of Reason Character
Capturing the Devil by Kerri Maniscalco – Well, well, well – I suppose I’ll include a sighting from Thomas Cresswell in this TBR.
Zero – A Book with Ghosts
Remember Me by Chelsea Bobulski – While I didn’t do so well with her first book, I’m so down for a spooky hotel!!
Doctor Finklestein – A Spooky Book with an Eccentric Character i.e. like a Mad Scientist
Spectacle Vol. 1 – Working as a fake psychic and having a demanding ghost sister attached to you certain makes for eccentricity.
Halloween Town: A Book with a Spooky Town
When the Sky Fell On Splendor by Emily Henry – Splendor seems like a bit of a town that could have some spooky moments.
What’s This: A Book with a Mystery
Here There Are Monsters by Amelinda Bérubé – if this was a contest, I think I’m going for this one as spookiest cover.
Prompts I’m Still Working On
- Santa Claus: A Non-Spooky Book for a Palette Cleanser
- Sally’s Song: A Spooky Book with a Love Story Featured
These should be pretty easy to figure it out for, since I know many spooky stories tend to have a side love story, and a non-spooky books definitely can be picked easy enough! Let me know if there are some good ones for them!!
I hope you enjoy them all!

OOoooh! I LOVE thriller books omg. I have to read ALL of these. What You Hide is a great book! It involves a “haunted” library. So obviously. Actually, all the Natalie Richards books. They seem spooky and supernatural but they’re actually REAL THINGS that can happen, so it’s automatically creepier. I LOVE them!
I really need to read Here There Are Monsters ughhgughghguhguhguh

Thankies!!! I AM GOING TO TRY. And YES. it’s kind of a trashy fun read at times, but there is a Cresswell and it does have a proper spooky, mysterious vibes!

I’m so excited to read House of Salt and Sorrows! I’ve actually read a couple pages from it already, and the writing is amazing so far. It’s definitely a book with sad undertones because the main character and her family are grieving the losses of her sisters. The books in this TBR all look sooo spooky, and I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on them! I wish you all the luck with this readathon ❤
