Publisher: Speak
Genre: Historical Fiction

Lina is just like any other fifteen-year-old Lithuanian girl in 1941. She paints, she draws, she gets crushes on boys. Until one night when Soviet officers barge into her home, tearing her family from the comfortable life they’ve known. Separated from her father, forced onto a crowded and dirty train car, Lina, her mother, and her young brother slowly make their way north, crossing the Arctic Circle, to a work camp in the coldest reaches of Siberia. Here they are forced, under Stalin’s orders, to dig for beets and fight for their lives under the cruelest of conditions.

Lina finds solace in her art, meticulously–and at great risk–documenting events by drawing, hoping these messages will make their way to her father’s prison camp to let him know they are still alive. It is a long and harrowing journey, spanning years and covering 6,500 miles, but it is through incredible strength, love, and hope that Lina ultimately survives.

  1. I really liked Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys, so I’ll add Between Shades of Grey to my list as well!

I did not really like The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, but I see a lot of good reviews on that book as well 🙂

Sometimes, it’s just so refreshing to be reading a book without romance.

  2. Yes to all of these!
They were so well written and I am glad the author’s didn’t put romance in, it would have taken away from the story!
I especially loved “A Danger to Herself and Others” and “The 7 1/2 deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle”!

    1. Ahh, another 7 1/2 Deaths fan! May we squeal for a moment over how every “character” Aidan inhabited was completely a new individual but still the same protag?? And hoe that plot never stopped introducing new twists?

  6. I love reading books without any romance! I always find it super refreshing to read a book that completely focuses on the plot at hand and not on any romance. Omgg, I love The Seven and a Half Deaths of Evelyn Hugo!!! Every time I’m in a bookstore with someone I automatically recommend it because it’s just so great!
Also, I absolutely adore your new header!! It’s so pretty 😍😍

    1. I’m glad we’re on the same page! We can get the best character growth in no-romance stories, too! I love that!

omg I am forever recommending Seven And a Half Deaths too! My life would not be as complete if I hadn’t read it.

      And thank youuu!!
