FIRST IMPRESSION FRIDAY is a meme started by J.W. Martin at Storeys of Storeys. Take a sample of a book you have just started (a chapter or two, maybe a little more), give a few impressions, and predict what you’ll think by the end.
Thomas Wildus and the Book of Sorrows tells the story of twelve-year-old Thomas, who finds a book that helps him unlock his magic abilities.
Somehow (I mean, I really wonder *how*) the title of this book made me think the story inside would have a darker, gloomier tone. Instead, I open it up and get sunny California and two young trickster boys (Thomas and best friend Enrique) who love playing doodle wars and teasing each other. The blast of happiness and kid-like fun was so enjoyable to read that I was easily immersed into Bergen’s writing. I’m only two chapters in at this point, but Thomas is a likeable boy that I can see becoming a hero to follow. I anticipate a 5 crown read.
The cover and title both definitely give the impression that this is going to be a dark story. I’ve never even heard/seen this book before this post.

It’s an independent pub! So the author has to reach out and do a lot more of the publicity himself. Yep, the title and cover certainly gave off a feeling that did not match what I read! But I liked what I read!
