Top Five Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by the lovely Shanah @ Bionic Book Worm where bookworms get to chat about their top five books based on different topics.
This has been my first year blogging, my first year writing reviews for books I read and keeping track of what comes and goes from pubs. It’s been a major success in the book reading realm, but have there been books I didn’t get around to? For sure!
Book blogging is that curse and gift rolled up in one. You’re surrounded by books 24/7 … so you get to see, 24/7, all the amazing books you could and should be reading! You can never read fast enough!

The Light Between Worlds, Laura Weymouth

My friend Rendz (from Reading with Rendz) sold me on this book before it even hit shelves. Now I finally, finally, have a copy in hand but with 2018 winding down and several arc reviews due before the year wraps, I don’t think I’ll be able to get to TLBW before the new year.
Charlie Hernandez and the League of Shadows

Expect a lot of Rendz’s recommendations in here because our tastes really match up and her reviews are THAT good. This book is on my Goodreads TBR (and my Christmas wish-list)!

Smoke in the Sun, Renee Ahdieh
Click cover for Goodreads info.
As a Renee Ahdieh fan, I find it personally appalling that I haven’t finished her Flame in the Mist duology yet. But I was only a hesistant 4 crown rating on Book 1 (see my review HERE) and from the Goodreads reviews I’ve seen, Book 2 is not stronger. I still want to read SitS, but I’m waiting out a paperback release.

Caraval, Stephanie Garber
Click cover for Goodreads info.
This book wasn’t really on my radar, since it released before my entry to bloggerdom (at a time when I only casually perused books at Indigo). But I saw a review of Legendary over at Kaya (A Fictional Bookworm’s) blog and the gears started turning. I might not get it this year since I forgot to add to my Book Outlet haul list *sob* but next year!

The Last Namsara, Kristen Ciccarelli

Click cover for Goodreads info.
Another book that slid under my radar but did make it into my Book Outlet haul. (See pic of haul HERE.) I have already proclaimed my adoration of the forbidden love trope which oh, look at that, is promised on the gorgeous cover page, but I don’t think I’ll have time to get around to this before 2019.
The Last Namsara is one that I was going to add to my list as well. It’s been sitting on my immediate TBR shelf for almost a year……. and yet I still haven’t gotten to it! AHHH! Thanks for participating – added you to the list 🙂

Here’s to both of us getting to The Last Namsara in 2019!

So many amazing books this year – how could one possibly get to them all?? The Light Between Worlds is also on my list of books I wish I’d gotten to in 2018. Ah well – that’s what 2019 is for, right??

I still need to read Caraval too! It’s sitting on my Kindle just waiting for me. And Legendary keeps giving me the eye every time I’m at the library.

You have the whole set at your disposal, begging to be read! Will this post be the nudge you need to open up your Kindle and get started? 😀

We should do a buddy read of Smoke in the Sun! I read Flame in the Mist when it first came out and really loved it but never picked up the sequel. I’m excited to see where it goes.

That sounds perfect! I know I’m going to have a lot of thoughts when Smoke in the Sun comes out, so having a second person to bounce them off of would be great. I’m in!

I read Caraval as an ARC back in the day. I really liked it. It was magical and sisters and I am a fan

I love books with strong family themes! This is promising.

I just commented on someone else’s list that “Caraval” was probably the number one book that I felt bad about not getting to in 2018. Glad to see I wasn’t the only one that didn’t get to it this year. It is going to be a priority next year though.

I think I saw one too many posts praising Legendary and realized I was far too behind on this hyped series. Definitely need to get to it next year!

I am so honored to have been the one to introduce Legendary?! I seriously hope you enjoy it! And also, The Light Between Worlds looks too awesome for words…

Yeees, you raved about it enough to make me feel a terrible need to add Caraval to my wish list and get started on this series!!! Bask in the honour!!

I bought Smoke in the Sun a couple months ago and I’m so sad that I haven’t gotten to it. For the same reason you haven’t, I think. I liked the first book well enough (4 stars as well), but I haven’t heard as much positive feedback for the second book so I’ve been holding off on it. Hopefully we get to it next year! And I hope you read Caraval someday! I actually really like that book 🙂 It reminds me of The Night Circus.

I think I’ll still enjoy Smoke in the Sun (Ahdieh’s writing is always stunning, it was truly the plot that let me down in this one, and the romance wasn’t as strongly constructed), but other books have captured my interest more of late. I believe in us getting to it in 2019! I’ve not heard of The Night Circus?

Hope so! While I’m waiting for all the amazing new releases in January, maybe I’ll pick it up in the meantime. And you haven’t?! You MUST read The Night Circus. It’s so lovely and even more sophisticated and magical than Caraval. I think you might like it 😀

The Night Circus. Just the title sounds wondrous and magical. I’ll look it up, thank you for recommending!

I enjoyed Caraval but have WAY more love for Legendary! Just saying!
Smoke in the Sun is on my TBR still as well. I’ve been pretty bad with sequels lately? Been trying to change that but.. yeah, we know how that goes. :’)
As for books I didn’t get to in 2018? Maybe I should simply list you my entire owned TBR or something. xD

Ooh, so that’s a sequel I should be excited for! And I usually am pretty good with sequels. Except for the Six of Crows sequel. I’m quietly ignoring that one…
Hahaha, oh dear. That is not good.

Whyyyy?! I liked Crooked Kingdom!
Eh.. Yeah it’s not. I remember starting 2018 with 147 books on my owned tbr? I KNOW I read over 50 of those but.. my current list says 220+ with all my 2018-additions. I’m.. screwed.. [But at least I’ll always have plenty of reading options. :D]

I don’t knoow, I think I just *enjoyed* Six of Crows. There were no flaws in the writing, or plot, or characters, but when I was done I wasn’t emotionally moved. I can’t explain it more than that! So nothing makes me want to run and get Crooked Kingdom.
How.. how did that happen? *eyes TBR* Now I feel like I need to keep a real eye on this. BUT you’re totally right, you’ll never be short on reading options!

You don’t need to explain it more! I totally understand! It’s like.. you can’t really fault anything except for not being emotionally invested like you expected / wanted to be and that leaves you “numb” towards any sequel there might be / come. Been there!
I swear those things start growing all by themselves at some point. That HAS to be it.

YES! Exactly. You explained it so well.

I enjoyed the last Namsara and I’m excited to get to the second book in the series, although I totally forgot to add that to my list! Ugh. There are so many I missed. You’re not alone. Caraval was super fun, I loved Legendary though. Finally, the Smoke in the Sun is also one I need to get to! I started listening to the audiobook and it drove me nuts, so I put the book aside for a bit…. and now it’s been months and I’ve forgotten to get a physical copy to read.

Oh boy if I counted all the books I didn’t get to this year….. Now that is a LIST. But I really hope you enjoy the light between worlds and Charlie Hernández! I got the last Namsara too and I’m really looking forward to it!

Shhhhhh, it’s 2019 now, you can pretend those books just magically vanished. OOohh, maybe we could buddy read The Last Namsara? It wouldn’t be any time soon (definitely not in January) but if you’re interested.
