Short-a-Thon TBR: 10 Books in 7 Days??

Welcome to the BPR December 2018 TBR for the Short-a-Thon, hosted by Kathy @ Books and Munches and Destiny @ Howling Libraries! When I heard about this read-a-thon, I knew I had to take part: what better way to sprint into 2019? I don’t have the most novellas/short stories, so expect my TBR to contain a few medium-length novels, but I’m still ready to finish them all in a week!

What’s the Short-a-Thon?

From 12:00 AM on December 21 to 11:59 PM on December 31 (one week!), you must try to read all or as many of the shortest books on your Short-a-Thon TBR. The TBR should have ten or more books.

SHA’s TBR

[032 PGS] The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me, Roald Dahl
I picked this up two weeks ago, in my newfound quest to acquire and read all Roald Dahl children’s books. I’m not even sure what the plot is, I just saw Roald Dahl and added to my book pile!

[128 PGS] Behind You, Jacquelin Woodson
This is the sequel to If You Come Softly, which I didn’t read. I didn’t even know it was a sequel when I bought it.

[160 PGS] Alma, William Bell
A teacher gave this to me alll the way back in elementary school, and it’s been a treasured book ever since. I haven’t re-read it in over a decade, so I think now is the perfect time.

[160 PGS] Dustbin Baby, Jacqueline Wilson
I can’t remember if I bought this book, or a teacher gave it to me, but it was definitely a teacher who started me on Jacqueline Wilson’s books. Also in elementary! I was a big reader and my English (and math teacher, for some reason!) were always hunting down books for me. They supported my passions so, so much, and I am forever grateful!

[176 PGS] Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Roald Dahl
I don’t know if I ever read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but I saw both movie versions. Time to fix that!

[176 PGS] The Meanwhile Adventures, Roddy Doyle
This book is so, so, so funny. (At least, this is what my memory from 5+ years back is telling me.) I can’t wait to re-read it!

[192 PGS] Terror in Winnipeg, Eric Wilson
Eric Wilson is the first ever author I met, back in elementary (are we sensing a pattern?) when he came to talk about his series and sign books. I think I got a signed copy, but I can’t find it anymore. (He’s Canadian!!)

[195 PGS] The BFG, Roald Dahl
The movie was not what I was hoping for. Time for a book refresher?

[237 PGS] A Monster Calls, Patrick Ness
I’ve heard more about this recently. There’s a movie out now, right? The font is pretty big, so despite the “higher” page count, I should get through this quickly.

[256 PGS] A Little Friendly Advice, Siobhan Vivian
I actually ran out of shorter books around this point. When I reached the age when people stopped buying/giving me books and I had to pay myself, I couldn’t justify the cost of something I could finish in under an hour—so if I did read, it would be on loan. And I wanted to stick with books I owned for this TBR.

That’s it for my TBR! A few re-reads I’ve been putting off in favour of ARCs and new purchases that were too tantalizing to ignore, and a couple new books I’ll be able to knock off my to-read list. I don’t know about Mandy, but I’ll keep the majority of my reviews on Goodreads for these (aka they won’t be showing up on the blog!) so if you want to see my final thoughts, make sure you follow me there.

MANDY’s TBR

[30 PGS each] Fence Issues 9 – 11, C.S. Pacat

I didn’t even know more volumes came out, until I popped on to check it out for this TBR. The art and tension in this is amazing, and I am ready!

[96 PGS] Aquicorn Cove, Katie O’Neill

This is alllllllllllll the cuteness, and I’m just ready to dive into the cutenessssssssss. SO. MUCH. CUTENESS AWAITS ME ON THIS COVER SO MY FEELS ARE READY.

[100 PGS] Mischief & Magnolias, Kristi Cook

Mischief is a novella after the events that happen in Magnolia. This book used to be one of my favorite books, after I reread this year, I was lessssssss than pleased with it. What was prior Mandy thinking? However, I have this little novella that I might as well just binge read real quick and then forget the series existed. I believe it is Christmas themed as well?

[128 PGS] Legendary Ladies, Ann Shen

Occasionally, a nonfiction book can catch my eye. One about legendary badass ladies? THAT will get me everytime.

[128 PGS] History Vs Women: The Defiant Lives That They Don’t Want You to Know, Anita Sarkeesian, Ebony Adams

Well look yet again. Me reading about defiant ladies, being their empowered self. YES PLEASE. Merry Christmas to me?

[192 PGS] Lost Soul, Be At Peace, Maggie Thrash

This book is a graphic novel that is part memoir, part ghost story, and like, okay you had me at ghost story??? I love me some graphic ghosties, so I’ll just be over here going, GHOSTIES!! It promises to be an emotional read, and like, are all of my books on this TBR going to involve me crying???

[224 PGS] Mary Shelley: The Strange True Tale of Frankenstein’s Creator by Catherine Reef

The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein renewed my interest in Mary Shelley and Frankenstein, so I am readyyyyyy to read all about the creator of the classic.

[240 PGS] Nutcracked, Susan Adrian

Well, Christmas falls right in the middle of the readathon, so I figured why not sneak in a little Christmas themed book??? This is an adorable and emotional sounding MG book with The Nutcracker overtones. I think it will definitely be a perfect Christmas Day binge read!

[240 PGS] Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon: Short Stories Vol. 2, Naoko Takeuchi

Well, it says it’s 240 pages, but it’s manga so it’s probs only like 1/10 of that. And it’s Sailor Moon. I’ll just binge it all and bask in the brilliance.

[266 PGS] My New Crush Gave to Me, Shalini Petroff

Why not continue my descent into Christmas themed reads that I have literally never done before in my life? Makes perfect sense.
