So, this girl couldn’t go to a book festival and not pick up a fewwwwwwwwwwwwww books. And by a few, I mean, I could have probably picked up an entire suitcase with the books, but I was told this wasn’t a thing and I needed to pack this thing called, clothes? Hmmm sounds sketch, but we all must do what needs to be done.
I have two categories that are for this Yallfest 2018 book haul: the ones that I bought from Blue Bicycle Books because they were pre-signed, and the ones that I received through the publishers whether it was through ARC drops or visiting their tents.
Bought Books
- New editions of Grave Mercy, Dark Triumph, and Mortal Heart: I mean, is there really any explanation needed? I mean, do I need to say words? It’s my love, and shiny, pretty new covers with Robin’s signatures? Um, sign me up.
- Stay Sweet by Siobhan Vivian: I’ve been waiting to pick this book for a while, and the moment I saw that Siobhan was going to be at Yallfest, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to pick it up if they had a signed copy- which they did and it was brilliance!
- The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein by Kiersten White: This was one of my favorite reads of this year, and I had wanted a signed copy since the moment I finished it. I was so so excited to find a copy, because this means that I wouldn’t have to wait in her ridiculously long signing line I was sure she would have.
ARCs
- Courting Darkness by Robin LaFevers: I AM SCREAMING I AM SCREAMING I AM SCREAMING I AM SCREAMING I AM SCREAMING I AM SCREAMING I AM SCREAMING I AM SCREAMING I AM SCREAMING I AM SCREAMING I AM SCREAMING. That is all.
- Come Find Me by Megan Miranda: this book is my second most anticipated read of 2019, and I can’t believe I have it in my handssssssssss. I adore Megan Miranda so much, and it’s based with Stranger Things vibes – and I can’t think of anything better????
- Opposite of Always by Justin A. Reynolds: This book sounds so good. It sounds a bit like A Short History of the Girl Next Door where boy meets girl and then emotions get INTENSE. However, it adds in time travel and messiness, and I’m sooooo in. Plus, that cover is so cool, and I’m just 100% down for allll of this.
- The Afterward by EK Johnston: I’m still not sure I fully understand this summary, but it sounds like intense fantasy and fierce females? I’m intensely going to have to stare at it until it makes sense, but that purple on that cover is a lot of love.
- You Owe Me a Murder by Eileen Cook: Sha was the first one to tell me about this book, and she was one of the books she really really wanted. Therefore, I will be shipping it off to this girl so she can get her murder mystery on.
- Song of the Abyss by Makiia Lucier: So this is a companion of sort to the first book, Isle of Blood and Stone. They’re part of the same series, but I’ve read that they can be read as standalones. I’m pretty sold by this first line: “Ancient grievances, long-held grudges, and dangerous magic combine in this sweeping fantasy.”
-
Mary Shelley: The Strange True Tale of Frankenstein’s Creator by Catherine Reef: Ever since reading Dark Descent, I’m back in deep with the Frankenstein vibes. I totally am readyyyyyy to dive in deep for one of the first females that totally brought iWht in gothic and scifi literature.
- We Contain Multitudes by Sarah Henstra: “Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe meets I’ll Give You the Sun in an exhilarating and emotional novel about the growing relationship between two teen boys, told through the letters they write to one another.” Well, I love Aristotle, so I’m v. intrigued for this.
- Field Notes on Love by Jennifer E Smith: This was a book that I picked up on a whim mostly because I thought the cover looked kind of cute and I recognized Jennifer’s name. I remember loving her first book, and I thought the title was adorable. I’m so so glad I did pick it up, because the summary sounds so so good. Some adorable feels on a cross country train trip??? YES YES PLEASE.
- Cold Day in the Sun by Sara Biren: I’m not quite sure about this. I don’t know how I feel about sports romances? I usually hide from sports, so I’m not quite sure. We will have to see.
- The Love & Lies of Rukhsana Ali by Sabina Khan: This seems emotional af, and like, I just have been really feeling like I need some strong feels?? I don’t know too much about this, but I’m intrigued.
Ok, so I got Courting Darkness and I’m wondering if I can read it without having read Robin’s other books?
Also THAT COVER IS GORGEOUS.

You know, I’m not entirely sure? I haven’t quite heard anything if it can be read as a standalone. I know she references a few of the other characters in it, so I think some knowledge could be key? And IT ISSSSSSSSSSSSSs. so so cool. I do recommend the rest of the series, though!!

Hehe yeah Mary’s story isn’t the happiest, but I knew that going in. I like how the author wrote out her life story though 🙂 because it didn’t read like a dry history book to me, haha.

I didn’t even realize she was coming out with a new one. And it threw me off because the color changes you mentioned. And oooh I’ll have to see if you read it first to see your thoughts for it. Thankies, Sam!! 🙂

I don’t have an ARC, so you will probably be reading it before me.
