Captain Hook!

Captain Hook has always been an interesting villain for me. I never really took him too seriously, and I feel like I never really trusted his murderous intentions to be…actually murderous? And maybe that’s why Once Upon a Time actually turned him into a fantastically charming Irish man with just the right amount of guy liner to be a love interest? But in Disney’s original telling of Peter Pan, I always felt like the guy was a little lonely, just needed a hug and tell him that he was a good pirate, and he was a bit misunderstood. I totally think he would dive into some YA books and truly love them – and so would his non-permed Once Upon a Time counterpart.

What books couldn’t Hook wait to get his hook on?

Sweet Black Waves by Kristina Perez

As Sha put it to me, this book was a retelling of a French Romeo and Juliet with magic. Does anyone else feel that Captain Hook just feels the feels and just loves tragic love stories??? I feel like he would be living for this one – either rooting for them to tragically end or pining for them. Plus, he might have been convinced it might have to do with something with water so he might have been a bit misled.

Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller

Piratesssssssssssssssssss! Of course, Hook would want all pirates things especially since he thinks of himself as a fancy pirate. The best pirate in the land…well, I mean, sea! He probably fancies himself the pirate king. He would like the hat he got with it.

Percy Jackson

Does anyone else see Hook thinking himself as some Son of Poseidon??? I feel like he would be like YES, I AM SON OF THE SEA GOD. I GO ON ADVENTURES. I KICK GODS’ BUTTS. HEAR ME…deliver some quips? Eh, I feel like he would like it. It would be his jam.

These Vicious Masks by Tarun Shrinker & Kelly Zekas

I also believe that Hook would totally be into Victorian/Regency novels. I feel like he has a whole stash of them somewhere. This is one of the coolest ones I’ve read set in that world with super fun funnies and epic adventures. It’s got a dash of romance and a whole lot of wit – which I’m sure Hook is scribbling away notes in his notebook.

A Book Hook Would NOT Pick Up

Wicked Charm by Amber Hart

Wicked Charm Cover

Wicked Charm is set in a swamp Southern area. Know what’s in swamps? Crocs. Know what Captain Hook hates just about as much as Peter Pan? That croc with a clock that ends up eating his butt. Definitely would not appreciate a reminder.

Want to read more about Captain Hook?

Well, there has been a few retellings of him in past years. In fact, there was a rush of Peter Pan retellings a few years back although they have slowed down a bit. Unhooked by Lisa Maxwell Once Upon a Timed Hook and made him the wonderful love interest in this novel. Lost Boy: The True Story of Captain Hook by Christina Henry has gotten some good praise. Here’s a list of Peter Pan retellings where you can find some Hook in there!

  1. Well, I never would have thought Hook to be such a romantic! XD Great pics Mandy! I totally see Hook swallowing up lots of these books! Maybe add in a couple of books with a piano motif. He does love to play! Great post! Can’t wait to see who’s next!
P.S. I think OUAT made a great–great–decision to make Hook, hot and Irish and the guyliner was parfait!

    1. I just feel it, Rendz, idk why. I feel like he has secret ships…in his big ship. But ooooooh yes! He would love him some piano books.

AND I SO AGREE. We didn’t need a fake perm. Just the pirate of our dreams that they gave us.
