Two weeks in a row of villains and Mandy being on top of her book stuff? Call me impressed…with myself…which sounds very conceited so I’m going to stop myself. Let’s just see who we are tackling this week?
Ursula!
Ursula is one of the most beloved Disney villains out there, and you can see why. She’s theatrical, has many a catchy tune, and she’s all about that female power…erm, when she’s not stealing other girl’s voices. She is power hungry, and ultimately wants to take down the patriarchy of King Triton…even though it is for nefarious deeds. She’s cutthroat (although not as much as her Hans Christian Anderson role model since she doesn’t cut out Little Mermaid’s tongue), and she’s got plenty of sass to go around. Ursula’s own actress said that she thought Ursula was “part Shakespearean actress, with all the flair, flamboyance and theatricality, and part used-car salesman with a touch of con artist.”
What books would be in Ursula’s tentacles?
To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo
I feel like Ursula would be loving the evil siren gals, snatching people’s hearts out of their chests. She would be like, ugh, why didn’t I think about that instead of stealing voices??? Plus, she would be loving the Evil Sea Queen, who I’m pretty sure might have been her tentacles and all…which would mean I’m cheating with this, so let’s pretend I’m not and have Ursula go yayyyyyyyyyyyy sirens!
Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young
Is anyone else thinking Ursula would be into Vikings? (And the crowd collectively sighs yes.) IDK, but I just get her being super into Viking/warriors and Viking warrior princesses – which this book kind of has. I feel like Ursula would be in love with Eelyn and her fierceness. Plus, the Vikings were known for being a bit theatrical for their epic fighting, so Ursula would be loving the fight scenes.
The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw
The moment Ursula sees the title, she’ll probably think it’s 100% about her? I mean, she’s down in the deep in the sea and she is pretty wicked? She’ll be a bit disappointed when she finds out, but I think she’ll get over it pretty quickly since she’ll find out it’s about 3 witches that drown a bunch of random boys each summer. She totally approves, and wants to know where can she sign up?
A Book Ursula Would NOT Pick Up
Girl Out of Water by Laura Silverman
No sea monsters in water. Nobody gets eaten or tricked or bespelled by water. Not even much water. Plus ROMANCE? Ursula is not a fan.
Want to read more about Ursula?
Well, YA has certainly been showing her the love lately! Leigh Bardugo showed her some love in The Language of Thorns, To Kill a Kingdom kind of showed some love, and there is a new book called Sea Witch that is showcasing Ursula in her YA glory.
What do you think? What books do you think Ursula would love or hate? Have you enjoyed any of the picks I had up here? Am I crazy for thinking Ursula would love Vikings? Let’s discuss in the comments below!

UN Right #30
30. No One Can Take Away Your Human Rights.
Well, Ursula snatched up Ariel’s right to talk. I mean, Ariel knew something was coming, but did she quite realize that this was coming? That she would have to fight hard and go without something so dear to her? Nooooooooooo. King Triton Mandy has some things to say about that, but we’re off talking about nobody being able to snatch away rights.
I have sea witch pre-ordered. I can’t wait for that book to come out. Love this post so much. Very creative. I now have to add all of these to my tbr list.

I haven’t read any of these books (definitely going to read To Kill A Kingdom), but I agree with your assessments here: Ursula would definitely be envious that she didn’t think of snatching people’s hearts out of their chest, she’s love the bloodthirsty fights of Vikings, and witches drowning dudes? Sounds right up her alley. XD

That was definitely an intriguing one. But I totally agree. She totally missed a golden opportunity there. XD But thank you!
