About the Book
You’ll Miss Me When I’m Gone
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Release Date: January 2, 2018
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary
Synopsis:
Eighteen-year-old twins Adina and Tovah have little in common besides their ambitious nature. Viola prodigy Adina yearns to become a soloist—and to convince her music teacher he wants her the way she wants him. Overachiever Tovah awaits her acceptance to Johns Hopkins, the first step on her path toward med school and a career as a surgeon.
But one thing could wreck their carefully planned futures: a genetic test for Huntington’s, a rare degenerative disease that slowly steals control of the body and mind. It’s turned their Israeli mother into a near stranger and fractured the sisters’ own bond in ways they’ll never admit. While Tovah finds comfort in their Jewish religion, Adina rebels against its rules.
When the results come in, one twin tests negative for Huntington’s. The other tests positive.
These opposite outcomes push them farther apart as they wrestle with guilt, betrayal, and the unexpected thrill of first love. How can they repair their relationship, and is it even worth saving?
From debut author Rachel Lynn Solomon comes a luminous, heartbreaking tale of life, death, and the fragile bond between sisters.
Rachel’s Guest Post
Since music plays such a big part of Adina’s life since she is a viola prodigy, do you have some songs that you would have playing in the background of your book and why?
Thank you for having me! I’m happy to share a few songs I listened to on repeat while writing YOU’LL MISS ME WHEN I’M GONE, along with an explanation of how they capture an emotion I hope comes through in the pages.
I love Nirvana, but I love Hole too, which is somewhat of a controversial opinion in Seattle. Regardless, this song has always broken my heart. I feel it describes one of my protagonists, Adina, so well: she’s someone who’s confident in her body and know she’s beautiful, but she starts to question whether that’s all she has to offer someone. The line “someday, you will ache like I ache” cuts to my core.
“You’ve Really Got A Hold On Me” by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles
This is another song I’ve loved for a long time. It describes so effortlessly the feeling of loving someone you know you shouldn’t — maybe it’s the wrong time or they’re no good for you or you’re not fully yourself when you’re with them. This could describe Adina as well, who pursues a relationship with her music teacher, but it could also describe Tovah, the more logical, scientific-minded twin, who for a while stops herself from going after what she wants because of the nightmare her family is living.
“Rocks and Water” by Deb Talan
This is a gorgeous song I discovered on a Pandora station while I was revising YMMWIG, and I immediately looked up the lyrics because it evoked such a quiet, nostalgic mood. To me this song is about the twins’ mother, who loses more of herself to Huntington’s every day. The lines “I will be with you even then/Even when I cannot see your face anymore” are staggering when you think about a mother losing the ability to remember her daughters.
“Rainy Days and Mondays” by the Carpenters
This song feels so Seattle to me (must be the rain!) and evokes a sense of loneliness both my protagonists feel before realizing they need each other more than they ever knew.
