My Year in Books – 2017

Oh, look, it’s me, after having lied to you all again that I was back when I CLEARLY WAS NOT. I don’t mean to be lying, yet I keep doing it. Christmas kicked everything back out of whack, and here I am again, every time exhausting myself into mindless voids and finally finishing a certain Percy Jackson book.

Everything will be back to regularly scheduled programming in the next week, and I’m really am going to be doing that intense blog hopping, answering my emails (which has all my new followers I must investigate and the lovely tags/comments in moderation), and answering my comments. I WILL DO THIS.

I also have some things up my sleeve – Book Princess Reviews will be having a new princess-y feature that I am SO SO super stoked about and collaborated with one of the coolest people I know with on. I’ll also finally be getting to those breakdowns of the best books I read in 2017 and reviews I never did (especially for the Percy Jackson books and the rest of the Grisha trilogy along with a few others I snuck in there while I was in book hiding). And we will finally have a Princesses Read/Heroes/Villains/Disney Heroines Read again!!

Well, it is New Year’s Eve, and I hope everyone is having a lovely one! I rarely do anything for it, and 2017 has certainly been a year that I’m hoping to hurry off into the night. I’m hoping everyone is going to be having a lovely 2018, and I can’t wait to see what it all holds for us!

ANYWAY, now that all that non-fun bookkeeping is done, shall we get onto the actual year in review?

2017 year in books

averages

That’s right – I ended up reading 184 books this year, which surpassed my reading goal by 24 books. I’m not sure I actually read 184 books fully, since I am a true princess of DNFing and I read like 3 books on audio. I did finally mellow out on DNFing toward the end of the year, though, so I mean, yay team?

average rating

Okay, can we just discuss how happy this makes me??? For the past few months, I feel like literally any book I review has just been so MEH. I’m doling out two and three crowns constantly, and before the Percy Jackson series, I had such a hard time remembering my last four or five crown read. So, I’m quite impressed with myself for having a solid 3.8, since I did read a lot of pretty good reads this year.

Books That Were Added to the Favorites Shelf

If you have been following me for any time period, you know I’m insanely picky about my books being added to my favorites shelf. I literally only have 38 books shelved on my favorites list out of the 1412 books Goodreads believes that I have read. So, um, it’s insanely impressive that 13 books actually made it on the list this year. STOP BEING A BOOK HIPSTER, ME. GET IT TOGETHER.

My top top five books? Speak Easy, Speak Love; Daughter of the Pirate King; Furyborn; Gemina; and either one of the Simone St. James books.

Honorable Mentions

These books were so so close to making it to the favorites shelf but then slightly missed the mark for me in some sort of aspect. Sasquatch, Love, and Other Imaginary Things was crowned literally best premise ever for me, so it gets its own little special place in my heart forever.

Biggest Disappointments

Well, that was a lot. Oops.

Other 2017 News

I started the Princesses Read series this year, and it has been such a joy to do it. Ladies and gentlemen, you have been so lovely and encouraging about it, so it gives me such joy to jump into these Disney characters’ heads.

I reached 1300 followers this year, WHICH IS INSANE SO THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. You’re simply the best, and there is no amount of thanks I wouldn’t stop saying.

I fell in two deep obsessions in 2017 that you all had to deal with: Sailor Moon and The X-Files. THEY ARE THE BEST, and I’m so behind with both of them. HELP.

Looking to 2018

As I said, I’m got something cooking up my sleeve with the princesses and a super cool contributor that I will be revealing in the next few days. The Princesses Read will be staging a comeback. I will finally make a dent in those tags that I’m forever behind about??? And maybe I will create something brand new I haven’t even thought of yet! We shall see???

2018 seems to be interesting so far for books. I already have a few I have my eyes glued to, and some just seem like perhaps I will one day look into further? I have no true plans for books I super want to get to, but you can best be believing I will continue the Rick Riordan spiral.

So, what was your 2017 like? Did we share any of the same favorites/disappointments? What were some of your favorite reads? Are you more excited for 2018 reads coming? Let’s discuss in the comments below!

  1. I loved so many of your favorites. Gemina, Pirate King, ACOMAF, One of Us is Lying, Eliza, Speak Easy, Geekerella, Warcross, Saints and Misfits. But I was really excited to see It’s Not Me, It’s You. I love Strohm and want everyone to experience her witty humor.

  2. That’s an impressive year! I can’t wait to see what you come up with in 2018. Meanwhile, my average rating on Goodreads is the lowest it’s ever been, so there’s that.

    1. Thanks so much, Moira!! Can’t wait to see what’s coming for your 2018, too. Hope school is a lot nicer to your TBR this time around. 😉 And OH NO. From what I’ve seen on Goodreads, you’ve been hit with a lot of not so good reads lately. 😛

  3. I’m so excited for Furyborn!! ACOMAF is amazing. My favorite of the series so far. I have to say I didn’t like This Savage Song that much either, I didn’t finish Our Dark Duet.. You had an awesome year.

  4. I loved A Court of Mist and Fury, and the Hate U Give. I am also in the middle of reading Furyborn, and I am pretty sure that it is going to be one of my favorite books this winter break.

    1. The only reason that I’m not fully in it is the spiral is because they haven’t arrived and then you might not see me for a while. BECAUSE I AM SO READY. Have you read all of his series??
And thanks so much. Hope so for you, too, Rhea!! ❤

  7. You read so many books!! I actually liked This Savage Song. I disliked Poison’s Kiss too but I’m quite sad to see that you didn’t like the Hazel Wood. It’s a book I wanted to read this year.

    1. It’s so weird to look back and see just what I really did. Trust me, I didn’t think I did any of this lol. I thought This Savage Song was good, but for the strangest reason, I was totally disconnected with it. I’m glad that you much preffered it. And Posion’s Kiss was just a mess. But I’m hoping you will enjoy it so much more. I feel like I’m one of the only people that did not like it, lol.
