Hellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllo there. I am sitting here going, hmmmm, what shall I do on the blog today – write that review finally for the deliciously spooky Hunting Prince Dracula? NO, BECAUSE BEING CAUGHT UP IS OVERRATED. Should I try and get caught up on the more than a few scrolls down a folder of tags? OF COURSE NOT BECAUSE THAT WOULD JUST BE SILLY? Should you oh, I don’t know, come up with an ingenious addition to one of those series you randomly created? NO NO NO BUT YOU KNOW WHAT YOU SHOULD DO, MANDY? DISCUSSION POST. EVERYONE LOVES A DISCUSSION POST.
*you cannot see it but there is a lot of internal eye rolling going on thanks to this lukewarm introduction paragraph here*
Anyway, I was reading Invictus by Ryan Gradulin (which is really good so far), and I started to notice chapter titles and actually, for once in my reading career, started reading them. It wasn’t until halfway through the book when I started to skip them again, I asked myself the question, “Am I alone in always skipping the chapter titles/information/etc. or is there a bunch of bookworms out there doing the same exact thing?”
So, what do you actually read and don’t read in a book? Obviously, we all read the text in books that makes up the story, but what do we actually decide what to skip or not skip? Does it change for each story? Obviously, we all read the actual story, but how much do we read of the “extras”?
What I Do/Don’t Read (aka the weird book habits of a Book Princess)
What I Don’t Read
- Chapter Headings: I don’t why, but I am forever skipping ahead straight to the content of the chapter. I finish my chapter, and my eyes just naturally go straight to the next part. That means I usually miss witty or deep character titles that I’m assuming authors have spent a good amount of time crafting, descriptions of where the characters are and what time/date they’re in, or some magical quote that I’m sure will have a profound impact of my life. The only time I actually want to deal with them? Well, Spelled by Betsy Schow had made up quotes from fictional fairytale characters, AND I CRIED THROUGHOUT THAT BOOK SO I COULDN’T DEAL WITH THAT AND GAVE SO MANY VIRTUAL PROPS TO IT.
- Descriptions – for the most part. I used to be terrible with descriptions. The moment I see an author trying to describe something – whether it be a tree, a dress, or literally anything except a main character – I’m out. I don’t much care about what this random house that I will never read about again when I could be revving up my book speed game and split on this paragraph. I will read some descriptions if they are quite beautiful and interesting or if they’re creating a particular atmosphere like in a certain spooky novel (looking at you Hunting Prince Dracula). But if it’s just for the sake of describing pretty things, Mandy out.
- Like, the first five pages. So, you have the opening page that’s blank, the title page, the copyright information page that has a lot of blah blah blah (except for that two sentence summary thing THAT I USED TO BE OBSESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSED WITH A FEW YEARS AGO AND HAD TO READ EACH AND EVERY ONE BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT GAVE ME INTENSE INSIGHT INTO THE BOOK), the dedication, the table of maybe contents, and I’m sure there’s something else thrown in there. I skip through all of them just until I get to my beginning part where I can skip the first chapter heading as well.
- Blurbs from other authors/random people off the street/celebrities/etc. You know how a book will have that little tagline on the cover? It will be all like, MARISSA MEYER SAYS THAT THIS BOOK WAS MMMMMMM OKAY, AND SHE IS YOUR QUEEN SO YOU KNOW, READ IT? Yeah, Mandy isn’t into that so much. Most of the time, I either don’t know the person or to be kind of callous, don’t really care? I know I’m going to most likely be Captain Unpopular Opinion, so I’m just going to disappoint what magically amazing author that loved it. XD

- Sneak peeks/excerpts from other books. When I was rereading The Lunar Chronicles this year, I noticed that so many of them had excerpts for the next book in the series. Here you are, thinking you have so many more pages left to go in your book and oh, oops, NOPE. It’s actually this really awkwardly long excerpt of the next book that will take a year to come out. -_- I noticed they haven’t done too many of these in the past few years, which thank gosh, because I was scarred from Scarlet’s ending and where I read the sneak peek of Cress and was forever ruined BECAUSE I COULDN’T HAVE THAT BEAUTIFUL BOOK FOR A YEAR. NOT FAIR NOT FAIR NOT FAIR.
What I Actually Read
- Acknowledgments. This is actually a new thing. Before a few weeks ago, I always skipped this page at the end of the book. It was just something that I didn’t need to bother with. I mean, I don’t know a single person in the thank you’s, so why read them? However, Rendz at Reading with Rendz mentioned how she read every single page of the book including this, and I’m like, huh, maybe I should give it a try. The first one that I did was actually really interesting – it was for Stephanie Perkins’ There’s Someone Inside Your House. It was so interesting to see the author mention names that I actually knew from the book publishing field and then fellow authors that actually influenced and helped. It was so enlightening and so interesting. I know so many people skip this one too.
- Summaries. There are some books that I don’t read the summary for, but for the most part, I will read a book’s summary on the inner flap or back multiple times before I actually read a book. It’s my own way of getting hyped up for it. Usually when I have a large array of books that I’m having a hard time narrowing down to one on, I’ll pick up a book, reread the summary, and most likely convince myself to read it.
…okay, there is apparently a lot that I don’t read. Oops. v.v Perhaps that’s how I read books so fast? I don’t play around (OR APPARENTLY READ ANYTHING XD). Am I missing out, though? I’m not sure. I mean, I feel like I haven’t been missing out, but I really am surprised at all much I did miss with skipping the acknowledgments. However, I do think it means a lot more being in the book blogging field than had I just been on my own before.
I mostly skip chapter headings, unless I realize they are important or they seem interesting. For example, in If Birds Fly Back, each chapter began with an diary entry or book excerpt, depending on the character, and they were actually interesting, but some just have a line from the chapter, and they are not important. I skip a lot of the “outside” the story stuff – blurbs, summaries, sneak peeks (who wants to read part of a book? Not this girl.), but I have become very interested in the dedications and afterwords. I have read some really amazing ones, and now I look forward to them.

Ooooh, that’s good to know. I might have to try some of them out then. And lol, I SO agree. Might as well just wait for the whole one. 😉 And yes! There is a whole range of ones they do, so I’ve become quite intrigued. Thanks so much for the input! ❤

Great post, Mandy. I don’t read chapter heading as well, like quotes or song lyrics, time and date. I agree about the descriptions of things. It can be annoying when it took up a whole page. Also, the excerpt from another book. I’d rather pick up a new book than reading a part of a book I’m not even sure what’s about. I enjoy reading dedications and acknowledgments, though. Some can be really funny. 🙂

So so agreed! I find that I might as well wait to get to the next book if I’m going to get a little peek of it and that’s it. But yes! I definitely started reading them for the funny parts. Thanks so much for the input, Des! 🙂

This was such an interesting post! I also always skip chapter headings, even though it gets me into trouble, because I’m usually so eager to crack on with the story. It’s such a struggle when the POV is changing and I don’t realise because I didn’t read the chapter heading!
I recently started reading the dedication/acknowledgements and love them!

Yes! I have noticed that it does become a struggle then and I’m like, oops, I will try really hard the next time around. XD
And yes! They end up being so interesting sometimes. Thanks so much for the input! 😀

I do read chapter headings, because sometimes they can be really fun, like in Percy Jackson and InkHeart. I used to skip acknowldegments, too, but one day I read them and now I never skip them. This was an awesome post, Mandy!

Ooooh, okay, making mental notes not to skip those ones for sure! 😉 And yes! It really is eye opening when you end up reading them for the first time. And thanks so much, Clara! ❤

Thanks for posting this, and putting your reading preferences out there. I have to admit I’m usually a skimmer when I read. Excessive descriptions and eloquent language don’t really do much for me. I like to get to the “meat” of the story and dialogue. I will admit, though, that I do like chalet headings. I think they give a book just a bit more personality. So much more interesting than plain numbered chapters!

I so agree with you! Skimming really helps me out in the story. And huh, maybe I will have to give them a try then! I do hate the plain numbered chapters! Thanks for the input! 🙂

I read the chapter headings (like what Clara said. Rick Riordan’s are funny) and I ALSO READ THAT LITTLE TWO SENTENCE SUMMARY ON THE COPYRIGHT PAGE! I didn’t know anyone did that other than me. 😀 I kinda skim over the acknowledgements… just to see if there’s anything interesting in there… Fantastic post, btw!

OMIGOSH, I DIDN’T KNOW EITHER. I’m so glad that I put that out there because they are EPIC. I feel like I gain so much insight into the book when I do that. But yes! Sometimes they will have some interesting shoutouts. And thanks so much! ❤

I love this 🙂 I’m just like you while reading too, I skip the chapter names and sometimes it’s just ‘chapter 1’ ‘chapter 2’ or characters names to show POV switch so… I can’t be bothered with them really, cuz as soon as you start reading the chapter you can understand the POV switch when the main character starts talking about ‘she’ or ‘he’. 😊 doesn’t take a genius to figure that out… I also don’t read the excerpt for the next book, because why tease myself… I did just recently started reading the acknowledgments and to my surprise my blog was listed in there, I was so excited, I think I called everyone in my family to tell them hahaha. I however really like reading the people’s little comments on the cover of the books, gets me excited for the book hahaha I’m a sucker for the marketing ploy, what can I say 🤷♀️

Lol yes! I so agree that it’s super easy enough to pick it up so why bother? And yessssssssss to the excerpt. Might as well just wait until until the next book comes out! And omigosh, how EPIC is that! 😉 I would definitely keep reading them after that. Thanks so much for your input! 😀

It’s good to see I’m not a weird reader but I’ve never actually thought about how I read . I usually skip the chapter titles and the descriptions bore me , so I skip them too . I don’t really read the acknowledgements for all the books , but I do read the acknowledgements from some authors . And I’m not summary – girl either . Sometimes I read them and others , I just don’t bother . But the thing that bothers me while reading ? POV changing . I might as well throw the book away for a while because my mind just can’t take the other voice in (if that makes sense ) until after sometime .

The only time I read blurbs is if I know a blogger I follow has blurbed it. I love seeing what they have to say. Otherwise, I couldn’t carless what another author has had to say. There’s been some discussion going around as to how honest author blurbs actually are when some come off so generic.
I read Acknowledgments too! I always do it. Sometimes there will be shout outs to other authors or bloggers who helped with the process.

Yes! I will totally agree with you on that – if it’s a fellow blogger, I will definitely read it. Oh, huh, I haven’t heard about that, but it is an interesting topic. Some of the ones that I have read do feel quite generic sometimes.
And yes! I’m so beginning to love it! 😀

Said it before, gonna say it again: I read cover to cover, no page left un-turned, no word left unread (sometimes I skim the numbers on the ISBNs though) and I even stare at the blank pages for little bit (the ones at end of the book that seem like a waste of paper, yup those).
What can I say? I feel like if don’t read everything, or just flip through all the pages, my book will be unloved >.< I can't have my books going unloved 🙂 But that's just me, you're not missing that much. Though I do recommend the dedication and the acknowledgements cuz those are funny sometimes! Oh and if you read Marie Lu's Young Elites series there are little history snippets at the beginning of the chapters you might want to read those…but you could skip them. Hehehe it's up to you.

You totally sold me on the acknowledgments part. I can’t stop reading them now! I’m like, Rendz said that it needed to be loved and it’s so good! 😀 Ooooh super good to know! I shall not skip them! 😉

You’ve pretty much described my whole reading process.
I do sometimes read chapter headings but most of the time yep I skip them. It’s only really if they are particularly witty or relevant that I’ll read them.
I’m also terrible with descriptions, and I don’t just mean that one little thing that features briefly. I mean all descriptions. I honestly couldn’t tell you a single thing about what any character looks like. I make it up myself based on how they act and speak. I do think this is a big reason why I often struggle with sci fi and fantasy. Imagination only gets you so far if you completely ignore the descriptions.
Also, absolutely love the acknowledgements and dedications. Some are hilarious.

Ooooooh, I feel like you may have just explained to me the issues I have with scifi and fantasy. You make such a good point. But I so agree.
And yes! I didn’t realize how much beforehand but you’re so right! Thanks so much for the input! 😀

HECK YES! So much of this is me! Chapter titles are stupid and give hints away, sneak peeks at the next book are pointless and blurbs don’t matter to me anymore. That person blurbing that book doesn’t know if I’ll like the same as them. I will read the acknowledgements because I’m curious about their research process and stuff like that. LOVE this post 🙂

I always read chapter headings, and I never skip pages because then I feel like I’m cheating the book out of something important. Even if it starts getting really descriptive and boring, I’ll read it, even if I only skim it. I glance at the copyrights now and again, but I never read them into depth. However, I always read an author’s note and I usually read the acknowledgments, but it depends on how much I liked the book. The blurbs on the front/back of the book piss me off most of the time (they sound so pretentious. Is that how I sound when I review?), so I don’t read them, and I never read the sneak peaks because it’s like, “If I’m interested in reading the book, then I’ll read it, but if you’re trying to bait me, you’re only wasting your time. I do what I want.”
Basically, I try to give the book as much love as I can, but there are some occasions when I don’t care enough to bother with certain things.

Ahahaha that is a fantastic way to look at it, Alicia! I love it. But I do agree that skipping certain parts does feel like cheating and I do feel bad for doing it. XD But I do agree about those blurbs. It always just sounds off and super agree with the sneak peeks. XD Thanks so much for the input! 🙂

Those excerpt things? The marketers tell authors they have to have something for the reader to look forward to. It’s called (you guessed it) forward selling.
This was interesting, and varied enough that, and followed my own way of reading enough that I feel justified in my own writing for: leaving out most of the description (and flashbacks), not doing chapter headings, and leaving lots of ‘space’ for the reader to do their own ‘envisioning’ of the character/place, etc.
Thanks

I usually skip chapter titles too. The exception is if I just happen to notice one and it turns out to be funny or something, then I’ll keep reading them for that book. But usually my eyes just skip right over the titles and don’t even see them. Descriptions, I try to not to skip, but occasionally I will if it seems unimportant and I’m just not in the mood or not loving the book. Dedications/acknowledgements and stuff like that, it kinda depends on my mood lol. Those previews for other books at the end are so aggravating though when you think you have a bunch of book left, and then all the sudden the story ends! And I’m usually not interested in the previews, I’d rather just wait for the actual book to come out!

This is SUCH a great post, Mandy! It’s a lot of fun to think about our reading habits that we don’t usually notice. I do usually find myself skipping chapter headers for whatever reason. I do love reading the blurbs, just because I’m curious to see which authors blurbed it, and I LOVE reading acknowledgements. 🙂 I’m so glad you chose to do this post instead of catching up on other things, because it was really entertaining and fun! ❤

It feels like you read my mind and then wrote your post 😉😉😉 because I do the exact same things. I might glance at the chapter headings if I am in the mood, but I usually skip over the descriptions if I feel they are never ending and not adding anything to the story.. this is definitely the main reason for me being able to finish books so quickly.

Yes, same! Everyone asks how you read so quickly, but it’s really just skipping all of that. XD I usually can create an image in my head so usually the descriptions aren’t needed. Totally am with you on that. Thanks so much for the input! 😀

You read the acknowledgements??? Whenever I’m finished with a book I’m usually so done with it that the acknowledgements are so boring and I just go onto the next book. I guess sometimes they would be interesting…I wouldn’t know though haha. Actually my patience is small so there’s a lot in books that I skip, such as super long paragraphs.

This is so interesting. I also for the most part skip chapter titles/headings, unless I am reading one of those books that has multiple characters, then I HAVE to pay attention or I get lost.
I tend to skim the acknowledgments and will almost always read the discussion questions (if they are included).
Descriptions I struggle with too, especially if it is extremely scientific or overly detailed. I do try to pay attention to background/setting descriptions but end up skipping a lot of those too.
Thanks for posting! This was super interesting to think about.

YES. I super do agree about if it’s mentioning a different point of view. I can usually figure it out if it’s one or two but when it gets to be multiples, it’s so hard to lose step.
Thanks for your input! ❤

I read some of the comments about skipping the acknowledgements, but – here’s the thing – I have been known to put the names/pseudonyms of my readers (beta and reviewers) in that space – so, do you want your name in print (or e-print)?

I tend not to read the author blurbs or the first five pages either, but I don’t miss the chapter titles. Especially with a Rick Riordan book, they’re generally hilarious. Cassandra Clare also puts some lovely quotes from poetry in the Dark Artifices that her main character would have read at the time. I don’t always read the acknowledgments, but I tend to at least half of the time. (They don’t narrate that in the audiobook, so that’s why I miss a few.) I really enjoyed your discussion post though!

I originally wrote out a whole long comment that the WordPress app wouldn’t let me post when you posted this, so I’m going to comment in short form.
What I don’t read:
Chapter headings
Maps
Descriptions (if in a rush to finish the book or clothing is being described)
Copyright, dedication
Excerpts from other books (I tend to remember any excerpts I read no matter how long it’s been since I’ve read them, so I avoid them in case I want to read the book)
Summaries (I tend to remember what the book is about)
What I read:
Acknowledgements
Family tress/ pronunciation guides

And ooooooh pronunciation guides. I always forget about those. It really helps sometimes, and I really should follow your suit more with them. XD
