The Princesses Read Update & The Best Beauty and the Beast Retelling Ever?

Update

Since I’m neck deep in a blogging slump, my inspiration has vamoosed away – meaning the Princesses Read is on hold for a tiny bit. My issue is that with these posts I need a lot of creativity and energy to do it, and my silly goose brain has determined X Files and Real Housewives are far more enticing than talking about my two most important loves: princesses and books. I’m going to really try and get myself back into gear for next week, since we only have a few princesses left!! Merida, Aurora, and Pocahontas are our darling princesses that have been waiting for the perfect post – does anyone have a preference who is next? šŸ˜‰

Also, can we please talk about the fact that I’ve been doing this for how many weeks and literally never made a graphic for this series? I feel like a blog failure. XD A blailure.

Since I couldn’t get my slump to hide away, I figured I would instead, focus on a particular book that is all about a certain beloved princess. Sort of makes up for it?

Hunted by Meagan Spooner

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes and Noble

*I buddy read this with the wondrous Nadwa @ Painfully Fictional. If you’re not already following her, you really should because she is so completely sweet and cool and her blog is amazing. Fantastic reviews, shared love of TLC and Beauty and the Beast, and her blog is oh so pretty. Check out more about her here.*

Where do I even begin with this story? I’ve seen so many enjoy this book, and in the past few months, I’ve seen four stars after four stars after four stars. I knew I would enjoy this book since I’ve seen it constantly get fantastic reviews…but I was a bit worried because I mean, IT’S STUCK AT THOSE FOUR STARS. Nadwa and I were talking before we started and we determined that we wanted to be the ones to break the four star streak…and goodness, did this book do that. It easily got a five crown rating for both of us.

What I loved most about this book is that it felt like a fairytale. Most of the time with fairytale retelling, you get a super cool retelling of it, some intriguing changes, and a lot of the best elements of the original. However, most of the time it does not have the same feel as a fairytale – but this one did. I felt like I was reading the original, and it took me to a world of love and wonder and beauty. I was entranced – with the plot, characters, the writing, the world. Everything was so brilliantly done.

The elements of the original story were there, but everything was wonderfully expanded and new things added. I love how the author infused so much folklore into the story but also kept the original story there as well. I was hooked. I even forgot about the romantic elements that Beauty and the Beast has because I was so intrigued by the emotional changes happening between the characters inside and out. The characterization was beautiful. I even loved, loved, love the Gaston figure in the story. And then the baby doggies were so much love as well.

Although, not going to lie, I totally missed my Gaston song. It’s such a jam.

Everything about this novel was intriguing and beautiful. I will admit that I was let down by some of the beginning part because it did move a bit slowly. I know that knocked a star down for a lot of people, but I really did manage to go through those quite quickly to get to the other parts, and it didn’t bother me as much as it should have. I was too into the world and the writing to really care if it was going slow or not. But it is a bit slow moving in the beginning, just a warning.

I told Nadwa at one point during the read, this felt like ACOTAR a bit with the woods and the snow and a little of the feel. However, we both agreed (after Nadwa wonderfully pointed out) that what ACOTAR lacked with good sister relationships, this book excelled. The sisterly bonds were amazingggggggg, and if you’re looking for a story that explores true, loving sister dynamics, this is a book for you.

Overall, I can easily say this is the best Beauty and the Beast retelling I’ve ever read. It has the same feeling that the original story had but it expanded and beautified other elements. The folklore was stunning as well as the writing. I can’t tell you how excited I am to read Spooner’s other works after reading this one. Five crowns and a visit from Belle and an Anna rating because clearly sister love is amazing.

five-stars

  1. Okay so you mentioned Real Housewives and I am in love with Real Housewives! Which is your favorite?? I love the New York one!
(I know that this isn’t related to your questions that you asked but I couldn’t help myself)

    1. Ahahaha oh gosh, I don’t know if I have a favorite, but New York is SUCH a contender. Bethenny is the bessssssssst. And the Countess and Ramona always crack me up (I still sing the Countess’s songs? XD) Who is your favorite on there? But I do love Atlanta, Beverly Hills, Orange County, and New Jersey (although I think the past two seasons of that one weren’t as good). I haven’t tried POTMAC or Dallas.
(And omigosh, no, no, I’m so glad you did because I so rarely get to fangirl about them XD)

      1. Bethenny is def my favorite! Like AHHH!! She is such a trooper and I love her! But I also love Dorinda because she is so sweet and super nice! OMG did you just watch the New York reunion?? If so then you know about the shocker (yet not much of a shock) that happened to the Countess and Tom? I just started watching the show like a religion. My mom is super into the show so I am starting to get into it. Yeah not a lot of people like real housewives because they say it is so trashy and stupid, but i don’t care I am in love with it! I am so glad I can fangirl with someone in the book community! It is so fantastic! šŸ™‚

      2. YESSSSSSSSSSSS. She makes the best comments. Her with Ramona this season was hilarious. You could just see in her face that she was so done this season with her. XD Dorinda is hilarious as well. I’ve really grown to like Carole, too. Before I was just so eh about her, but I really do like her. How did you feel about Tinsley? AND YES I DID. It’s so weird to hear the Countess talk about how much she loves Tom and their marriage when she clearly is done with it. I figured it was coming, but didn’t htink it would be so soon.

But yessssssssssss. My mom and I accidentally got into it together, too! But I so agree! And yessss I’m super excited for this!! šŸ˜€

      3. Bethenny is my spirit animal I swear! I was even done with Ramona! She irritates me! But the best part of this season was when she got her face done just before Mexico, and she looked like a peeling tomato! HAHAHAH. I don’t either hate or love Carole. I just like her. Tinsley is the same way from me. I just like her. But I was super shocked that her first date with her bf was 5 days! Like woah. She just seems like she wants to only get married. No matter who it is , she just wants to get married. When my mom and I saw that comment with Tom at the beginning of the show, we turned to each other and started laughing because we knew it was about to happen, but we did not think so soon either! 7 months! That was a fast marriage. I can’t wait for the next season!! What do you think about Sonja?

      4. Omigosh, yes. Ramona was insane, but that whole Mexico trip was amazing. I loved how we finally figured out what happened with her face then. And yes! I think so. I was like, this is moving superrrrrrrr fast. I think the whole storyline with Sonja was really annoying. I thought she was okay, but the storyline was just a little too annoying. YES. And I can’t believe she gave up her Countess title for that. She was the same way – just wanted to do anything to get married. I used to really like Sonja, but she’s kist kind of there. She never fails to crack me up, though. You?

      5. I loved the Mexico Trip! It looked like a blast!! I am not a huge fan of Sonja. She just annoys me. Like I don’t get her purpose really. I thought she was hilarious at first too, but now I just don’t see why she is there. I feel so bad for the Countess, but at the same time I don’t because EVERYONE told her it was a mistake to marry Tom!

      6. Yes! When they were all drunk, I was dying. XD It seemed hilarious. But yeah, I can see that. I really think she has no point to the show. I mean, we can only talk about her boyfriends and the fact that she’s juggling them for so long. And yes, I feel the same way. There had to be signs that it was not the answer but still I’m sure that it’s sad.

      7. I so want to go on a trip like that! She does have so many boyfriends! Like in the last episode she had Frenchie but then she was like Plan B is my ex that I am still holding on too. I was like alright Sonja I see you… I was so sad for the Countess though. She deserves SO much more and I just wish her the best.

  2. So sorry you’re still having to push through that slump, but you are FAR from being a blogging failure, love. You are a blogging queen! Or perhaps princess would work better in this case! Wonderful review! I really want to read that one!

    1. Awh, you’re so ridiculously sweet, Krysti. ā¤ You're the best! I think I'm having some sort of summer mid-life crisis? XD But yesssssss. I think you would totally love. Not so many swoons, but it more than makes up for it with the setting and writing. You will definitely enjoy. šŸ˜€ (plus, it does have some green on the inside cover too and I know you love green).

      1. I totally understand. I feel like I’m starting to hit a wall too where I need to figure out where to cut back a bit, because there just isn’t enough time for everything, and it gets too overwhelming. Right now I’m posting everyday, and I’m thinking that’s probably going to have to stop unfortunately. What do you think you’ll do to pull out of your slump? I’d love to brainstorm with you, because I’m feeling it too. We can DM about it on Twitter if you want to.

      2. Yes! That’s exactly what I’m thinking too. I’ll get short bursts of inspirations but then it’s like, BAM, WALL. I think you and I might have overdid ourselves a bit. We were both posting 2 – 3 times every day and then…I think it’s catching up with us. I’ll go over to Twitter to DM about it. šŸ™‚

      3. Ooooooh perfect! I’m super glad. That sounds like a super good medium. Weekends off with some posts throughout the week. I had a big spurt of inspiration so I had a bunch of posts all scheduled but I am feeling better and I am feeling the inspiration coming back. I’m determined to set myself up for more only 1 post days, though. I think we’re kicking some book blogging slumps butt now, Krysti!

      4. I’m so glad to hear your feeling better. I do have posts everyday this week. They’ll be done after tonight. But next week, I’m really trying to stick with three only! We seriously burned ourselves out so hard. I’m not surprised this happened to both of us. LOL. At least we had each other to help get ourselves out of it! We are totally kicking blogging slump butt!

        Liked by 1 person

      5. Ahahahaha oooh, okay, that will be good. šŸ˜€ We’re going to get the hang of this. XD But yes! I find it so hilarious that we both burned out together at the same time. Apparently swoon sister magic? But yes! Your advice and thoughts helped so much with it. šŸ˜€

        Liked by 1 person

      6. Hahaha. Swoon sister magic for sure. It was nice being able to talk through that with someone. I think I’ll be down to four posts next week, and I’m SUPER excited about it. šŸ™‚

  3. You’re pushing through and that’s most important. I am SO SO happy you loved this book. It’s my current favorite retelling šŸ™‚ I also love that you added in the Gaston song. You’ll get out of that slump soon I’m sure šŸ™‚

  4. I love that this can be read as a fairy tale! It’s not a very common thing, with retellings. This sounds like absolute perfection from what you’re describing, Mandy!
Yet… No Gaston song? *lower lip quivers*
I’m now ready to face a slower start but a wonderful tale right afterwards. I love sisterly bonds soooo much! I mean, a good story needs more than just romance, right? Friendships and family love are a must!
And best B&B retelling you’ve ever read? Wow. I’m really, really intrigued now. I need to read this book ASAP! And I’ll keep an eye out for more from the author.
    Awesome review, Mandy ā¤ ā¤
