Mini Reviews: Eliza and Her Monsters & It’s Not Me, It’s You

These were easily the best contemporaries that I read in my month full of contemporaries, and since it has sadly been a hot second since I read them, the fangirling is still here, but not much else. XD I’ll try and contain the fangirling and actually try and get some sort of useful comments in here.

19932468_1960472197497979_1178737191518470144_nIt’s Not Me, It’s You by Stephanie Kate Strohm

One high school girl’s comedic examination of her dating past as told by the friends, family, and boys who were involved!

Avery Dennis is a high school senior and one of the most popular girls in her class. But a majorly public breakup with the guy she’s been dating causes some disastrous waves. It is right before prom and Avery no longer has the perfect date. She runs the prom committee, how could she not show up with somebody?

Post-breakup, Avery gets to thinking about all of the guys that she has ever dated. How come none of those relationships ever worked out? Could it be her fault? Avery decides to investigate. In history class she’s learning about this method of record-keeping called “oral history” and she has a report due. So Avery decides to go directly to the source. Avery tracks down all of the guys she’s ever dated, and uses that information, along with thoughts from her friends, family, and teachers, to compile a total account of her dating history.

Avery discovers some surprises about herself and the guys she’s spent time with — just in time for prom night!

Okay, another book I totally bought because I was obsessed with the cover – will actually not the cover but what was under the cover. It has this brilliant pink and purple underneath and those two under covers always get me. I LOVE THEM DEARLY, and the moment I saw it at Barnes and Noble in the wild, I knew I would have to own it – and I mean, it does sound epic.

“I was a frosty, unlovable ice queen, incapable of love. I should just build a giant snowman and lock myself in an ice castle and let Coco go off and marry Kristoff.” –> DO I SPY AN EPIC DISNEY REFERENCE??????? YES, THE ANSWER IS YES.

Can we talk about how hilarious it was? It was FUNNY and so witty. If I wasn’t actually laughing out loud, I was mentally snickering. It fully did remind me of Oscar Wilde’s quiet wit that makes fun of cliches and tropes in this way that seems secretive and like you’re the only one picking up on the joke. It was totally messing with the mean girl trope, and in between was all kinds of adorableness and cuteness.

Avery was fantastic. She really has a brilliant emotional and mental transformation, and it is the perfect coming of age story. There was some brilliant girl power as well. The rest of the characters were amazing as well. Hutch was ADORABLE, and Coco was a brilliant supporting character. I even was in love with Bizzy who was totally evil. They were just these fun little characters that had me forever giggling.

tiana
First cheesy read of the month got a Tiana rating – I would say that’s pretty brilliant.

And here’s the thing – this isn’t formatted at all like a book. It’s more like a play with no setting the stage and just added in thoughts from Avery. It’s a transcript of her dating history, and while I was worried about how I would deal without descriptions, the worry ended up being for nothing, because IT WAS BRILLIANT. It made it even more fun, if possible.

I’m going to end with another brilliant quote, but here’s the truth: this is a ridiculously easy 5 crown read and it would totally be a favorite if I could remember everything fully. I forgot a good deal, so I don’t think that’s quite a good sign, so it’s a Tiana for now. But it will so be moving up to favorite status when I do a reread – which I totally want to do super soon, much like the next book.

“Then again, it is inconceivable that anyone wouldn’t like Princess Bride. Except maybe someone like Bizzy Stanhope, who has no soul. Bizzy Stanhope would probably love to marry Prince Humperdink.” –> AND A PRINCESS BRIDE REFERENCE? *forever screaming*

Her story is a phenomenon. Her life is a disaster.

In the real world, Eliza Mirk is shy, weird, and friendless. Online, she’s LadyConstellation, the anonymous creator of the wildly popular webcomic Monstrous Sea. Eliza can’t imagine enjoying the real world as much as she loves the online one, and she has no desire to try.

Then Wallace Warland, Monstrous Sea’s biggest fanfiction writer, transfers to her school. Wallace thinks Eliza is just another fan, and as he draws her out of her shell, she begins to wonder if a life offline might be worthwhile.

But when Eliza’s secret is accidentally shared with the world, everything she’s built—her story, her relationship with Wallace, and even her sanity—begins to fall apart.

WOW. I will totally admit that I didn’t expect much from this book. All I knew is that it was supposed to be about webtoons and I was totally obsessed with that cover. It’s just sooooooo. COOL. Did I totally let that influence me? SUPER yes. Did it end up working out brilliantly? SUPER yes.

This story was the kind of story that I sat there and said, oh, sure, I’ll read a chapter, I won’t get addicted – and then end up reading five of them and literally yanking myself away so I can actually get something accomplished. The writing style was brilliant, and it was so easy to get addicted. I read this in two days, and it was mostly crammed in to one morning when I was seriously supposed to be doing something else.

There was certainly no sleeping with this one – it literally kept me up.

Ugh, I love Eliza. I loved Wallace. The webtoons infused in the story was brilliant, and they were oh so pretty. The mental health aspect was handled wonderfully (I can’t quite say for certain since I’ve never dealt with it, but it seemed well done to me). The suspense was fantastic. It is SO accurate about fandom life, and it even takes you through a new aspect of fandom life (through the eyes of the creator) that makes me rethink a lot of things. And…it might have even gotten me to shed a sort of tear. EVERYTHING WAS BRILLIANT.

I only had one issue with one of the things that happened toward the end, but I’m willing to overlook it with the rest of the story’s goodness. IT IS JUST SOO GOOD. I don’t know what else to say.

5 crowns and an Aurora rating, because it is totally a classic!

  1. Now I’m somehow more excited to read Eliza and Her Monsters than I already was. I’ve got a backlog of ARCs and physical books to deal with, but I’m hoping to get to it sooner rather than later. Eliza has anxiety, right?

    1. Ahahahaha. YAY! It really was such a good book, and I do think you will enjoy, Moira. And oh no, that doesn’t sound good, but yes, hopefully sooner rather than later! And yes, she does. It’s dealt with a bit later in the book.

  2. Eliza has been on my tbr for a while and I am super excited to read it, especially after reading your review! It’s not me sounds very interesting as well! Thanks for sharing 🙂

  3. Yay!! Two 5-star reviews in a single post! 😀 That’s what I like to see!!
These books sound soooo adorable ❤ Eliza sounds like Cath from Fangirl, but actually interesting xD (sorry if you liked Fangirl, I personally didn't 😡 ) and I can't wait to read it!
And those Frozen and Princess Bride references! What an awesome author ❤

    1. Yes! I was a bit worried that there might be too much fangirling in one post. XD
But yessssssssssssss. It was super good – a bit of Geekerella feels with the feels. And oh gosh, no, I don’t think it was like Cath (I read two chapters of that book and was like, nope, I’m out XD which was so not the case for this book).
And yesssssssss. ❤ So much amazingness.

  4. WOOOOO!!! Two five crown reviews! That’s amazing!!! These books sound absolutely wonderful. I cannot wait to read them. I have Eliza, so I’m really hoping that I can read it soon! Fabulous reviews, lady!!!

    1. I was so impressed that two got on the same post and didn’t explode from all the fangirling. But yesssssssssssss, I’m super hoping, too, because I have a feeling you are going to majorly love it. And thankies! ❤

      1. Hahahaha! Well, you did great! I think the multiple mini-reviews is a great idea. I’m trying to figure out a way to post more reviews to the blog without doing more actual posts. So I love this! Yay can’t wait to read it!

      2. Yes! I was trying to come up with a way to get more out without doing literally a month of them all. XD But I’ve seen a few people doing 3 or so and it works to maximize the posts and reviews. XD

      3. Most definitely. I’ve started reviewing on Twitter and Instagram when I just don’t have room on the blog for them. But I like the idea of posting multiples in one too. I feel like I’m still trying to figure out my blogging groove in a lot of areas.

      4. Huh. That’s actually a really good idea. I didn’t think about that one either, but that’s actually a really good idea. But yes! New things keep popping up and new ideas. There’ still so much. :O

      5. Yes! One day. 😉 But I really feel like it. Someone was asking me the other day about something to do with blogging and I whipped out a bunch of links and info and I felt so smart. But no, no, we’re not doing so well on that. ONE DAY FOR SURE.

      6. Hahaha. I do think it’s kind of funny when people ask me for advice now. I’m like, “I have no idea what I’m doing, but…” LOL. Still in the making it up as I go stage. ONE DAY!

      7. I agree! I will use the I have no idea what I’m doing excuse until November at least. LOL. After you hit one year, you’re a veteran in this world. No more excuses after that. 🙂

  5. I definitely need to put the first one on my TBR. I think I’ve been pretty clear about my Eliza obsession – but I’m glad to hear you loved it too!

    1. Yessssss. It’s so cute and funny and unique. I definitely think you would enjoy. And YES. I remember reading your review when you said you ended up going through the night to read. I was like, oh, that won’t happen but oh gosh it did. You warned me but I didn’t realize. XD

  6. I already bought Eliza in hardcover, solely from your review. Now it sounds like I need to rush out and buy It’s Not Me, It’s You. You’re not really good for my bank account, Mandy.

    1. Ahahahaha, oh no, I’m sorry, Birdie. XD But also kind of not sorry? 😉 But yesssssssss. They’re both super good, and I’m so excited to see what you end up thinking of Eliza. ❤ It's Not Me has a lot of just good comedy and wit.

  7. I’ve seen a lot of Eliza and Her Monsters around the community, but it’s not something that I would read myself. I’m always looking for books written in different and unique formats, and if It’s Not Me, It’s You isn’t written in a traditional format I could see myself maybe reading it.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yes! It’s considered the oral history/oral transcript of the main character’s dating life. So it’s basically like a play, but just focusing on interviews and no added on things like plays would have. It was super interesting.

  8. “All I knew is that it was supposed to be about webtoons…”
…Have I influenced you in some way, Mandy? 😉
Anyway, I really want to check out Eliza and Her Monsters now…it sounds so relatable, almost painfully. I need to read that.
And while I may not like romances too much, I may check out, “It’s not me, it’s you,” because it sounds hilarious. I loved those quotes.

    1. Ahahahaha You really have, Kate. And I was so impressed because I was like, I know what webtoons are and what some good ones are to start with thanks to Kate!
But yes! It’s super feely, but the webtoons included were superbly done.
And lol yes! It’s done in such a different format that you might enjoy far more than the usual formats. And the humor was great.

      1. …I might have accidentally not quite started them yet. BUT IT IS CLOSE AND I HAVE MY LIST. XD
Ahahaha oh no! Sorry, Kate, but also kind of not sorry? Because they were both super good. XD

      2. I Love Yoo is probably one of the better romances on the sight; it’s hilarious (one of the ones to make me laugh out loud), it has fun character, good art, and actually some psychological aspects that I love. I think you’ll like it, but once you start reading others, let me know, because I’m curious what else you may like.
