Waiting on Wednesday: The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell

Waiting on Wednesday is a meme created by Breaking the Spine where each week we discuss upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

THIS WEEK IS…

The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell

Stop the Magician.
Steal the book.
Save the future.

In modern day New York, magic is all but extinct. The remaining few who have an affinity for magic—the Mageus—live in the shadows, hiding who they are. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the Brink, a dark energy barrier that confines them to the island. Crossing it means losing their power—and often their lives.

Esta is a talented thief, and she’s been raised to steal magical artifacts from the sinister Order that created the Brink. With her innate ability to manipulate time, Esta can pilfer from the past, collecting these artifacts before the Order even realizes she’s there. And all of Esta’s training has been for one final job: traveling back to 1902 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Order—and the Brink—before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future.

But Old New York is a dangerous world ruled by ruthless gangs and secret societies, a world where the very air crackles with magic. Nothing is as it seems, including the Magician himself. And for Esta to save her future, she may have to betray everyone in the past.

Okay, to tell the truth, I was interested in whatever else that Maxwell would be writing after I read her book, Unhooked. It was this epic Peter Pan retelling that totally played into my Once Upon A Time fangirling dreams about Captain Hook. Oh, Hook on there is so swoony. I never thought I would be so into guyliner. Oh sigh.

Anyway, when I first read about this book, I was super intrigued. It gave me such Six of Crows feels, and any book that gives me SOC feels, I’m totally sold. Then Maxwell created the coolest way to get hyped up for this book with its own website, quizzes, jobs you have to do, and more. It’s called the Devils’ Own Contest, and while you’re learning more about the story, you’re also up for epic prizes such as chances for arcs, signed postcards, and more! Um, how cool is that? Check it out here!

So, awesome writer, awesome concept, awesome book fun. Um, so much YAY to all of these, so I can’t wait to get my hands on this. And I mean, Old New York? JUST GIVE IT TO ME.

    1. I only have read her Peter Pan retelling one, and it was actually really super good, so if you are ever looking for a Peter Pan retelling randomly, that would be the one. XD But YES. It’s so creepy but amazing. But yes, I totally agree. Definitely interested to see what this one will be like and if we are right on the SOC feels. 😀
