The Princesses Read: Snow White

18723044_1448881491834651_2842492773347622912_nBefore anything, Renuka over @ Past Bedtime Blog and I did a super fun post naming the first books were thought of with 10 epic Disney characters. Check out the post here!

A new week, a new Princess! I did say that it could be 3 different princesses, and while everyone guessed 2, TLC lovers, what happened any guesses for Ariel? Meyer did write a truly heartbreaking and intense retelling of the The Little Mermaid. I AM ASHAMED…but also, I never would have guessed that either. 😉

Each Saturday, I will be showcasing a lovely Disney Princess (or when they run out, some other Disney leading ladies and more) and showcasing what they might be picking up if they were reading YA today. It will be based off their likes, interests, personalities, and their storyline. At the end, I will also feature a book that the Princess would NOT be picking up and a section of books that are based off either the plot or original princess fairytale. Check out more info here on my original post! We’ve done Tiana, Belle, Jasmine, Rapunzel, and Moana so far!

Our Princess this week is…

Snow White!

That’s right! My DNF princess. This should be interesting since I, well, DNF’ed her the last time I tried to watch her. Poor Snow. I just couldn’t listen to her voice. It was just really high-pitched, and I was not a fan. Therefore, a lot of these books will be what I’m basing off memory and…Winter, probably. XD Snow White, though, is known for her kindess, her caring, being the fairest of them all – both physically but also in spirit and soul – and well, her cleaning. Her cleaning is really good. She’s also super trusting, honest, and super generous. The dwarves are also a huge part of her life, and she cares for them dearly, providing the first cartoon best friend group?

So, if Snow White was around today, which books would be the fairest of them all for her?

flashfallFlashfall by Jenny Moyer

This book sounds super epic, and I totally think Snow White would think so too. It’s a YA book about mining! That’s right – MINING. So, of course Snow White is probably sitting there going, oh my gosh, cool mountain book. Then she looks at the summary and goes, MINING. JUST LIKE THE DWARFS DO? I’M IN. I feel like she would be so interested into what the dwarfs do every day and totally want to know more, and this book could be an interesting start!

This book is dark and twisty. Snow White is kind of dark and twisty. I mean, can we just talk about that forest scene? That stuff was crazy. o.o And The Huntsman? Um, not scary at all for children. This book kind of feels on this level. However, that wasn’t the only reason that I picked this book. I think Snow would be interested in seeing the group dynamic. I’m sure when she was hanging out with the Seven (see what I did there, wink, wink), she totally would have come up with some cool names and ritutals and loved the closeness of this friend group. I mean, she may not have danced around with a little statue on a meteor rock, but I mean, I think she would cool with the bond the group had.

This was kind of an odd choice. But I think it was an interesting concept. The Huntsman is seen as this evil character, set out to kill Snow White. What do most people think about Rhysand in the beginning of the book? Clear cut bad guy set out to mess with Feyre. But in this book, he has this whole redemption arc where you get to see him really evolve into this “good” guy. I felt like it was much like with The Huntsman. He think he’s this big, bad, scary guy that wants Snow’s heart, but he lets her go. Had I not known Rhysand would be the good guy, I would have been surprised by the change much like I’m sure most of us were as kids. And I mean, in the Kristen Stewart version, the ship was with Snow and the Huntsman. 😉

fairestFairest by Marissa Meyer

Oh, you know I couldn’t get a The Princesses Read post without including a Marissa Meyer book. Looks like today will not be an exception. XD But I bet you’re really wondering now about why isn’t this book in the section for what Snow wouldn’t pick up. Snow is known for being generous, kind, and caring. I feel like maybe in her deep heart, she would to know why the Evil Queen did what she did and why she did it. I definitely think she would pick up this book to just try and understand her own evil queen a bit better.

Again, another odd choice. I had to think long and hard about this one, but I thought I would be very clever. Prince Fabian isn’t really in Snow White’s story until the very end of it. It becomes clear at the end who he is after he gives her the awakening kiss, but there really isn’t any physical interaction with them. This is just like PS I Like You. It isn’t until the very end that the truth comes out and the couple actually interacts. I think Snow White would definitely enjoy that and enjoy seeing how the romance plays out.

A Book Snow would NOT pick up

peeledPeeled by Joan Bauer

Apples. This books is about lots and lots of apples. I thought for the longest time that the town in this book was called Applestown. And…Snow? Yeah, I don’t think she would be quite good with all of those apples. o.o

Want to read more about Snow White?

I actually have read a few Snow White retellings! And I actually have enjoyed them quite a bit. Devoured by Amanda Marrone is part retelling/part just using the character of Snow White. It’s really good, though, and one of those epic amusement park books. Winter is, of course, another one, and part of the amazing TLC series. Stitching Snow by R. C. Lewis and The Shadow Queen by C. J. Redwine are ones on my to read list! Here is a list, though, with a few more.

For Next Week…

Oh, I don’t know. I thought narrowing down the princesses, this would get easier, but now it’s just hard to pick which ones I want to do next. Who would you like to see?  Or do you want it to be a complete surprise?

What do you think? Do you think Snow White would read these? What other books do you think Snow White would be reading? Let’s discuss in the comments below!

Also, I am participating in a lovely blogging meme – event – thing, called Big Blogger, Little Blogger. It’s super cool and being put on by A Well-Thumbed Reader. My blogging partner is A Dance Between Pages, and if you haven’t check out their blog yet, you totally should! There is a super good mix of reviews from adult to YA (they definitely convinced me to check out a few new books while also crossing off a few on my list). Check out these ladies’ blog here, and also check them out on Goodreads!

  1. Excellent excellent excellent! Love it so much! She’d definitely read Fairest to understand why her stepmother was such a meanie. And the mining book? 😂😂😂
Peeled is about apples? Is that it? I’ve never heard of it…sounds, um, nutritious? 🤔💭 🍎

    1. Thansk so much, Stephanie!! I I thought those choices were random enough to work XD
But it basically is! I never read so much about apples. It was supposed to be a YA journalism mystery, but there was so much apples.

      1. There’s a retelling I just found at my used bookstore that I work at…just found it today, speak of the devil! Almost bought it but saving for BookCon!
It’s written by Greg Maguire (?) and it’s the same author who wrote Wicked. I haven’t read that either but it’s called Mirror, Mirror, and it sounds kinda cool!

      2. Oh huh. I had never heard of that before, but I just looked it up. Does seem rather interesting. And the covers do look super cool on it, But yes, definitely have to save for that! 😀 And goodness, I can’t imagine working in the bookstore and not walking home with a ton of books every day. XD

  2. I personally like Snow White least of the Disney Princesses, because I like strong heroines and the princesses that stand up for themselves. That being said, I do really like re-tellings of the classic tale (probably because they usually feature leads that have a bit more spunk like the Shadow Queen.) Great post though! I can’t wait to see which princess you’ll do next week. Any idea if you’d continue with heroines? I love Esmeralda, Kida, Jane and Megara – so I’d love to see your picks for them as well.

    1. I agree! I kept thinking, what does she do that is fierce and strong and I’m like…all I can think about is her just singing while she worked. XD but you are right about the retellings! I really do enjoy them. Thankies, as always!! And yessssss! That is the plan!! I definitely want to keep going to showcase the understated heroines. 🙂

  3. I can’t watch Snow White either. Her voice makes me irrationally angry, and nothing really happens. I would love to see you do Merida, but she might be a bit difficult to do.

    1. Ahahahahaha yessssssss, Moira. I think I literally watched about…five minutes of it, heard her first song, and was like, nope, I’m out. See you later. XD but yes! Ooooh, I’m thinking of some good ones for her now. Definitely will be a big contender for next week.

  4. I like Snow White’s appearance when she shows up for something fun, like fangirling not when its another DNF >.< Totally agree with the books you've chosen for Snow. I haven't read most but your reasons seem 100% Snow-appreciative! I mean mining books, yes! Books with groups of 7, yes! The ultimate hot book boyfriend (that I have yet to meet), would totally draw Snow in! A fluffy contemporay = Snow White and of course the Evil Queens story because we all need a little back story! NO BOOKS ABOUT APPLES THOUGH, THAT WOULD BE AWKWARD! Great choices Mandy! I cannot wait to see who makes an appearance next week!

    1. Yes! I do agree. Poor Snow always gets so much flack on the blog. XD But why thankies, Rendz! I have yet to read the mining book myself (shhhhh) but I mean, mining is so much yes! And did you see how I snuck in some TLC??? 😉 But noooooooooo. Apples would definitely brought back some struggles. XD But thankies! I can’t either. 😉

  5. Love it, Mandy! I can totally see Snow reading ACOMAF. 🙂 I mean, everyone should read ACOMAF, right? I love that you include the retellings on these posts. That’s a fun element for fans for sure. And OF COURSE she would read a Kasie West book!

    1. Thanks so much! I truly just wanted to stick ACOMAF in there, and I’m like, okay, Mandy, just cram it in there someway. XD But thanks! When I first dived into retellings, I could never find a good place that would have all the listings of a certain princess. I still have struggles now. XD But yes! 😀 😀 😀

    1. I know! I totally didn’t even care what it was about other than the mining part because it was just so different. XD Seems really cool, though.
Ahahahaha. I’m like this really makes no sense, but I just want to put ACOMAF in and it sort of works. Thank you. XD

  6. You really know every princess Mandy! Snow White would definitely pick those books especially ACOMAF! Haha! XD Great post! I missed your past princesses, I am hoping I won’t be missing the future ones! 😀

  7. I want it to be a complete surprise, for sure! XD And I loved your choices/post as usual 🙂 You have the gift of coming up with really unexpected books, Mandy!
(Also, how could I forget The Little Mermaid retelling?? But to be fair, that was the one non-obvious choice so of course I went for the obvious ones XD Because I couldn’t be creative. Ugh)

    1. Yes! It’s going to be a complete surprise for me as well…although I’m not sure that will be a good one, though. And thanks! Although we should probably thank Goodreads since going through my shelves hits me with random inspiration. But lol, I don’t know how I remembered it. XD It just came to me, but it’s sooooooo not obvious. XD

  8. LOL. Unlike basically everyone else, Snow White is my absolute favorite Disney princess. My brother is super into theater and when we did Into the Woods in high school I was Snow White (a super minor character whose one line is “*YAWN*, excuse me”). He was super into show/character research and we spent a day watching the old VHS tape over and over. I got creepy good at mimicking her awful high-pitched voice and laugh. That being said, Snow White isn’t the most “badass” or traditionally feminist princess. But I do think her gentle and caring manner is an important reminder to be kind in a world that increasingly prizes fierceness above most things.

I used to LOVE Peeled but I completely forgot it existed, to be honest. I’m definitely going to have to find myself a copy and give it a reread. I love all your choices/recommendations and now my TBR is getting even more ridiculous. 😛

Sorry for the long comment, lol. Also I can’t believe I missed this when you posted it. Great post! I love this series you’re doing.

    1. I think if she didn’t have the high-pitched voice, I think I would have loved her dearly. Because you’re soooooo right about all of these things. She has the biggest heart, and you don’t see that as much with the other princesses, which is such a lovely and important trait. But omigosh, that’s amazing with the voice. I would have loved to see.,

OMIGOSH, YES. That my book when it first came out. And I accidentally found it again scrolling through Book Outlet and bought it so fast. It wasn’t quite as amazing as I first thought, but the nostalgia was A+++. But thanks so much! It’s so hard with book blogging. XD

And lol! No worries whatsoever. I knew Snow was your favorite and I was like ut oh. I tried to keep my complaining to a minimum about it. XD But thanks so much, Erynn!

      1. Hahaha I think you did a good job of not complaining, I mean I’m a crazy fan and I still loved your post lol. And I can sympathize about the voice, it really is a little much. It’s weird to think that it was once considered desirable or attractive when the movie was made haha. Why?!

I just remember Peeled making me want to be a journalist for a bit, and being really inspired by the protagonist. It’s funny how we can forget things that inspire us!

      2. Okay, cool. XD But yes. XD I actually like a lot of the other Snow White retellings, though. I will admit that I do enjoy the Snow White & The Huntsman. XD But yes, why??? is the perfect question.

I feel like I felt the same way. I totally wanted to be finding the answer to the haunted house as well. XD But it is super weird. I love doing weird Goodreads spirals, finding old books I read and totally forgot about.
