This week I will be fangirling about…

Doctor Who Season 10*

* technically it’s much further along in the seasons when you count the original Doctor Who, but I am just counting the newest reboot of it right now

I don’t talk about it often, but I am a huge Doctor Who fan. When I decided to take the plunge into the fandom a few years ago, I didn’t quite know what I was getting myself into. I knew a ton of people loved it, it was some cult classic from the UK, and that it was supposed to be amazing. Oddly enough, my dad got me hooked on Torchwood, the spinoff series from Doctor Who, and despite how much I loved and watched that show, I never really put it together that the two shows were connected.

moana head
I feel like Moana would be like, me, companion? No, I’m pretty sure I should be The Doctor here.

Finally, after re-falling in love with Torchwood, I decided to try Doctor Who. It was supposed to just be a fun little summer show to watch in the background while I wrote or did my summer classes’ homework. But then it turned into a binge watch that I couldn’t stop. And I was in deep. So what does a girl do?

She intensely searches throughout all of Ebay for the cheapest complete set, so she can frantically devour the rest of the series and stroke all the pretty covers.

So, I totally loved it. I got excited for it. Loved it…until I met companion, Clara. Me and Clara didn’t click. She was the Impossible Girl…I just thought she was impossible. So, when Calpaldi joined on with Clara, I didn’t give him the best shot. Because it was still Clara. And to me, Doctor Who had lost a lot of its spunk and humor and everything that made it that feel good show.

And then this season arrived. I didn’t quite know what to expect, but then the first episode arrived…AND DEAR GOSH, I’M TOTALLY BACK IN THE FANGIRLING CYCLE. THIS SEASON. THIS SEASON. THIS SEASON.

Calpaldi is amazing. Bill is amazing. Omigosh, Bill. I love her so much. She’s quirky, she’s fun, and she’s fierce. She doesn’t back down when she’s passionate about something or someone. She brings the fight back to the show, and it’s something I truly missed.

rapunzel
Rapunzel would be the best companion, because she would get ridiculously excited about everything.

Calpaldi is at his finest as well. AND I’M SO SAD THAT HE IS LEAVING. It’s like he just got here for me, and I can truly appreciate him. NOOOOOOOOO. D:

And the stories so far have been so intriguing. We apparently all know I love creepy houses now, so of course, I was ridiculously excited for “Knock Knock.” “Smile” was deliciously creepy as well in its own way, and “The Pilot” was amazinggggggggggg. The only one I wasn’t completely a fan of was “Thin Ice” but I still enjoyed it. Lately, it takes a lot for a TV show to pull me off book blogging here or away from my book, since I always feel the need to do something and watch TV at the same time. This season has actually made me set down a book quite a few times…LE GASP.

So, yes, this season = amazing to me so far. THIS IS THE DOCTOR WHO I KNOW AND LOVE. I WANT MORE, AND MORE, AND MORE. I’m back to a fangirling mess for this show, and if Bill sticks around, I have hope for the future although it sadly won’t include Calpaldi.

Okay, I’m going to try and complete the fangirling now. Breathingggggg…trying to breatheeeeeeeee…maybe. Now, I’m a few episodes behind, so I must rush to catch up.

What are you fangirling/fanboying this week? Do you watch Doctor Who? What do you think of this season? Let’s discuss in the comments below!

  1. I used to be really into Doctor Who, but I really struggled after the fifth season of the reboot. I didn’t like where they took Amy as a character (she started out so incredibly!) and REALLY didn’t like Clara. I pretty much ditched the show after 3 Clara episodes. It’s such a shame because I absolutely adore Peter Capaldi, but I haven’t been able to bring myself to watch the show. One day!

I’m trying to remember where I left off with Torchwood, I thought it was only two seasons but it looks like there’s four! It broke me as a human, I’m not sure I can go through those feels again 😥

    1. Ah, I know what you mean. It did get quite weird with what they did with Amy. And I SO agree about Clara. But yes, one day, because I will admit that this season feels like the beginnings of the reboot again. 😀

I think it officially was only two seasons, and then it did this little mini event, Children of Earth (which completely destroyed me), and then it came back on an American TV network and they destroyed it. That season was a mess. I loved the third season, but seriously, it will break you even more, sooooooo…maybe wait a long long time for the feels to die down. Fourth season, you are not missing a thing. XD

  2. AHHHH DOCTOR WHOOO!!!! We totally agree with you about Clara – it just made Calpaldi look boring (‘cuz she was boring)! She was just everywhere!! We started watching around the 9th Doctor (10th is our fave) – we were wary of the 11th, but that quickly changed when we saw Amy!! New companion for new Doctor! (Although Rose was cool for the 10th 😉😎). So when there was no change for Calpaldi…um made us sad…we tried to watch….but then….we stopped! This season is soo promising – our problem is that each episode is to SHORT – we feel it could use further detail/explanation! But yes we’re loving it so far!! 😆😆❤😆 🤓 *Dooweeeedooo Out✌🏻 *

    1. YES. THANK YOU. That was my issue. It felt like a chore to watch it, and I’m like Doctor Who is not a chore. But yesssssssssss, I love Amy. She totally made me excited for 11 as well when I was so firmly attached to 10. I do agree. I feel like there does need to be a bit more explanation with each of them. But very good !:D (and omigosh, best exit ever. XD)

      1. Oh no no no we can’t have our fave show become a chore! We needed a sassy Scottish to lighten up the darkness that would soon to come during the 11th Doctor! And Bill – we needed a normal awkward companion to take the seriousness that Clare added with the 12th. It allowed both Pearl and Calpaldi to shine!😃😃

  3. Doctor Who is my favourite show! I know this is a tough question, but who is your favourite Doctor? Ugh, I can’t wait to get home so I can finally watch this new season. 6 more weeks!

    1. When I started watching, I thought no one would be better than Eccelstone. He was silly and funny, but deadly serious when he needed it, and he could switch between the two modes so quickly. Then Tennant came along and he was better. Clearly no one could be better than him. He brought a bit of a bad ass edge to the Doctor while maintaining his free loving nature. A little too sappy at times, but a little sap isn’t a bad thing. Then Matt Smith came along. And (for me) he was even better. Maybe even perfect. Hilarious, goofy, mostly-life-preserving-at-all-costs, and a little mysterious. Who could possibly be better. Then Capaldi came along and I felt like quitting the show. Ha ha! He has grown on me, but nowhere near my fav.

      TLDR; Matt Smith.

      1. I definitely felt the same way as the Doctors progressed. Matt Smith is my favourite as well (but Tennant is a very close second). Capaldi has grown on me over time, but I agree he’s not quite the same level as my favourites.

        Liked by 1 person

    2. Ah, yay, Kyera!! I didn’t know that. 😀 But oh dear. My answer is totally weird, but I think I loved Tenant more as the Doctor, but I enjoyed Smith’s stories better. So I love them kind of equally? XD How about you? And yessssssss. This season has been sooooo good. You will definitely enjoy. 😀 Let me know when you get back and watch them so we can discuss! 😀

      1. Smith and Tennant are so tough, I love them both. My mom and I always talk about it, because I introduced her to Doctor Who and now she’s almost as obsessed. When she’s watching one that’s the one she loves most and then when it goes to the next season she loves the other one more she always has trouble choosing, but I think she likes Tennant more. I’m the opposite, I love Smith slightly more. But of course, they’re all fantastic in their own ways. That’s the beauty of Doctor Who. Matt Smith, Karen Gillen and John Barrowman will all be at my local comic con this summer, so I’m trying to figure out if I’ll be able to see them. 😍 (I’m going all three days, but my mom actually bought a Saturday ticket so she could see Matt Smith. It’s her first con!) Hopefully, there’s a panel but otherwise you can either have a photo op or go to an autograph signing. They are crazy expensive, so I probably can’t do more than one. Sadly. I’m trying to convince her to cosplay someone but I don’t know if I’ll be able to.

        Liked by 1 person

      2. I know! They are just so loveable for different reasons, and you just have to love them each. But ahhhhhhhh that’s so cool. I watch Doctor Who with my dad, so I understand the fun of it. But that’s so cool that you both have differing favorite doctors and will be going together. That sounds like so much fun, and yesssssss hopefully you can see them all! That would be amazing. I’ll definitely be keeping my fingers crossed!! Do you cosplay when you go? Hopefully you will be able to convince her since that would be a lot of fun. 😀

        Liked by 1 person

      3. I do! The first con I went to in cosplay I went as Lara Croft, then I got my best friend to go with me the next year. We went as Clary and Izzy from the Mortal Instruments. Last year I visited home for two weeks and went again, this time as Belle. Since I’m going for all three days this year, I’m probably going to do three different cosplays. I may go as Clary and Belle again. Not quite sure. I will have less than a month from when I get home until the Con, so my mom is going to help me make the costume (Wonder Woman!) I’m currently finding things online that I can alter for my accessories, since I don’t have a ton of time. But now that I know my mom is going it feels like a DW themed day so I’m trying to figure out if I can manage a cosplay for that. I don’t know who I would go as though. Have you ever cosplayed before?

        Liked by 1 person

      4. Oooooooooh, that’s epic!! And a Belle cosplay is amazingggggggg. I clearly amin for that one. XD But a Wonder Woman too? XD You literally do all the best. XD But hmmmmm…that would be hard since you would have really no time to commit to something really big. I’m trying to think of something easy and cheap. Just grab a plunger and a whisk and be a Dalek? XD And no, I haven’t sadly! I’m not super creative when it comes to that, and I never really had the time before. My two best friends are super into to that, so maybe one day I’ll have to get them to help me into it. I could be a princess finally. XD

        Liked by 1 person

      5. Yeah, it was super fun! There are actually two little kids that came up to me and asked for my autograph while I was there… Luckily I’m the weirdo who has practiced some of the princesses’ signatures from Disney. (I used to print out a picture of one of the princesses and sign it to put in with the matching bracelets I make if I parent was buying one for their kid. That was just an excuse to get better at it but I knew how to sign some of them before that. I’m a nerd.) My outfit was her town dress but Belle’s ball gown would be a dream. It’s gorgeous, I just can’t imagine walking around in August wearing it. Which princess would you pick?

I was thinking if I found a decent ginger wig I could be Amy. Otherwise I could be Dalek-Clara because that’s basically a red dress and utility belt. Or maybe female Captain Jack? I’ve seen that before. I’ve actually seen some amazing TARDIS cosplays though. (Think Victorian bustle skirt. Actually you could probably google it and see some great ones.) I think it’s definitely easier if multiple people go with the theme.

I don’t really know how to sew, so my focus is more on the props. I’m the kid who grew up playing with Legos and getting through every kid proof lock that my parents could find. So I like building stuff. I wish I knew someone who’s really good at sewing and could help me make fantastic costumes. I’ve been trying to convince my dad to help me build a lightsaber. I saw the most adorable BB-8 costume for dogs, so I want to get it for my dog. Then at some point I’ll be Rey!

This is getting super rambly and off-topic. Sorry!

        Liked by 1 person

      6. Omigosh, that’s adorable the kids asked you. So epic!! And authenticity is super A++. But yessssss Belle’s ball gown would be a dream. My best friend is trying to recreate the Cinderella live-action dress. Which is insanity. XD But so pretty. And I’m not quite sure. Even though I have a struggle with Snow White, I do love her outfit and the bow is so cute. Plus, you could have fun with the whole apple thing.

Ooooooh that could be really cute. I love the Dalek-Clara thing. That could be really cool and pretty easy. And female Captain Jack is always amazing. But those could always be good ones to do with it. Like your mom be The Doctor with you being one of them.

Omigoshhhhhhhhhhh that would be amazing. Props, though, always make the costume so much cooler. If you don’t have an epic prop to go with the dress, it loses a lot of the coolness. But omigosh BB-8 dog and a homemade lightsaber woudl be so ridiculously cool. :O Totally be the coolest girl at the Con. 😀

      7. Oh I would love to see that! The live action dress is gorgeous. I can’t imagine how much work she’s putting into it. I’m impressed!

        Liked by 1 person

      8. Yesssssssss. It’s insane. She has to buy a cage and had to hunt down a fabric that looked just enough like it. She put it on pause for now, because there is just sooooooo much going into it.

      9. Oh, I just had a thought. Are there any books that you’ve read that feel like Doctor Who? I’ve been trying to find some, but I’m not having a lot of luck.

        Liked by 1 person

      10. Oooooooh. Yes. I’ve heard that Invictus by Ryan Gradulin (I think that’s how you spell it) is supposed to be VERY Doctor Who. It even says for fans of Doctor Who. That’s the big one that I’ve been hearing about. I did just read Cold Summer by Gwen Cole that did involve time travel, but it wasn’t quite the feeling of Doctor Who. It was super serious. Interesting but super serious.

  4. Doctor Who has been SO GREAT this season!! I feel the same way about Clara. She didn’t have the same feel as the Davies companions. Rose, Martha, and Donna were all so “normal.” But Amy and Clara were these impossible complex people that weren’t just a girl working at a shop that got grabbed by the hand, you know? Bill is great though. I think she has every person feel about her. Calpaldi has been a great Doctor I’m sad that we’re losing him.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. You know, I never thought about it like that, but you’re 100% right. Maybe that’s why I like her again so much. They were the ones that were just grabbed off the street and made you feel like anything could happen. But the others were “meant” to be kind of thing. Super interesting. But I definitely feel that way about Bill. and I do agree – I didn’t realize just how much I enjoyed him as a Doctor until I knew we were going to lose him. 😦

  5. I also fell in love with Doctor Who pretty recently (maybe 3 years ago now.) Capaldi has grown on me. I was so against him when he started. Not because of Clara though. It was probably because I thought Matt Smith was the PERFECT Doctor; and Amy & Rory the perfect companions.

I don’t know what to think of Bill yet. I definitely like her. Need a few more episodes to figure it all out. Looking forward to the rest of the season!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. You’re definitely right – I wasn’t really a super big fan of him at first, but the perfection that was Smith and Amy & Rory (they are my favorite all time companions), and I knew nothing was going to measure up. You definitely said it well.

And lol, yes! Definitely looking forward to it, and hopefully she will stay very likeable. 😀

  6. I just did fangirl arm flapping. I’m a little embarrassed. Glad only the dog saw me. This requires all caps….
CLARA WAS TERRIBLE AND I HATED HER AND WHY DID THEY HAVE HER STICK AROUND SO LONG SHE COMPLETELY RUINED CAPALDI’S RUN AS THE DOCTOR AND HE IS ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS. BILL IS SO FEISTY AND FIERCE AND EVERYTHING THAT COMPLIMENTS 12 COMPLETELY AND SHE IS JUST THE BEST.

Bill may have taken Donna’s place as my favorite companion. It is close. We will see how the rest of the season turns out. Can you imagine if they somehow worked Jack back in with 12? Those two would be hilarious together and Jack and Bill would be amazing. I can hear their banter in my head and it is everything.
    Alright, fangirl out.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Ahahahahahahaha. Omigosh that’s hilarious. After reading your all caps section, I was about to do the arm flap thing as well.
BUT IT IS LITERALLY SO TRUEEEEEEE. YES YES YES YES YES YES. I thought the same thing exactly. Last season, I was like, oh no, I really have to do this again? While I enjoyed Calpaldi, I didn’t realize just how amazing he was until this season when he didn’t have Clara. I agree that it totally ruined his run. BUT BILL HAS BROUGHT BACK THE AMAZINGNESS, AND YOU ARE SO RIGHT ABOUT THE PERFECT COMPLIMENT AND I JUST WANT TO SQUEAL EVERY EPISODE.

Oh, Donna. Donna was amazing, but I totally agree. So is on her level. And totally a tie right now. BUT OMIGOSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, I WOULD CRY. They needdddddddddd too. The banter would be off the charts. *crossing my fingers forever for this*

  7. We could not stand the first handful of Capaldi’s run so we ran… we loved Doctor Who 10 and we mourned losing him. Maybe we can come back to it someday! You can’t really be a mega sci-fi lover and not love Doctor Who (well you can be but who would!?)

  8. WOOOOO WHAT A WONDERFUL POST MANDY!!! ❤
I'm so happy to hear that you love Doctor Who so much and seeing your fangirl about it was just fabulous!
I've only ever seen a few episodes of Doctor Who, back when Matt Smith was "The Doctor". I don't even know what season it was but there was some kind of re-run on TV and I watched episode after episode – and I truly enjoyed it!

    1. Thanks so much, Jackie! I truly let the fangirl out for this one. XD I was a little too chill last week. XD But ahhhhhhhh gotcha. It really is easy to fall into the pattern with it. You are all set to watch one and then as you said, episode after episode. XD

      1. Ahahahahaha. If you do master it, please let me know. Because as you said, I learned it and totally lost it. There should be handbooks when you become a book blogger. Like, do not go crazy on Netgalley and you really can say no to a book. That would have been lovely to learn from the start…or you know, now.

Oh. And I think I need to continue watching Doctor Who. I’ve watched a couple episodes and then stopped because.. school. Hehe. ^_^

Anyway, I wanna join this meme though! Haha! XD Great post, as always!

    1. YES YES YES YES YES. *screaming with you* Doesn’t it just mess with you? I know you weren’t the biggest fan of ACOTAR either and then BAM. This ruins you.

Hehehehe, yes, after school it might need to be continued. It has gotten really good. 😀

YESSSSSSSS. You should, Jannin!! It’s loads of fun, and you can just fangirl to your heart’s content.Thankies!!

      1. It did ruin me! Sarah has a habit of putting the action right around the end of the book. Which makes you crave for the next one! XD And for the first time ever in my entire reading life, this is the one series I don’t want to be spoiled! I’m so excited for ACOWAR!!!

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Yes! I hope so, too, Jannin! I think you’re a little better now, because when it first came out, EVERYONE was spoiling everyone, but I have noticed that it has slowed down a bit. But hopefully everyone’s ACOWAR will just all hide away from you. XD

        Liked by 1 person

      3. Yeah. I noticed it too when ACOWAR was still nearing its release. Most booknerds in Instagram announced it so some of those who haven’t read the book yet stayed away from spoilers. And yeah. I hope so too. 😀

      4. Yes! I got a few on Twitter. People were tweeting as they were reading and as you know, there is not as much of a spoiler alert with those as they just appear so I failed. XD But that’s great! Bookstagram seems to be much nicer with the spoilers.

  10. Okay I have only ever watched 1 Doctor Who episode and while I liked it, I was so so confused! How many seasons have come out? Aren’t there different actors who play the Doctor in each new season? I don’t know…this show confuses me so much! 🙈🙈 I would love some clarification and perhaps jump on the bandwagon!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Ahahahahahaha oh no, Rendz. It took me a totally long time as well and mostly through trial and error to figure it out. There are two kind of series that came out. There are the original Doctor Who’s that came out in the 60s and 70s. Then in like 2009 they decided to do a reboot that started with the 9th doctor and is what more people discuss is this reboot that is still going on now. But yes, there are a bunch of new doctors that do come to play. They usually last about 2 or 3 seasons of the show. What happens is the doctor is an alien and when he is dying or has some large trauma happen to his body, he regenerates into a new person (hence how a completely new actor can come and play him and there is no questions). The doctor always has a companion, usually some down on her luck random normal girl who he sweeps off her feet and takes her throughout all of time and space on adventures. That means history, the future, whole new planets, etc. but yeah, totally confusing to begin with.

      2. Lol, I tried. XD It’s really intense and complex and I only figured a lot of it by accident. It might be worth a try whenever Rendz actually gets a free minute. But time travel isssssss quite epic.

Ok, ok, I'm calm. But like, this is total awesome news! We can totally fangirl together from now on!
Alright, alright, I have a confession to make. I haven't watched Doctor Who in ages. Like, I'm currently in mid-season 7. SEASON 7. It's disgraceful and I plan on changing that very soon. VERY SOON! So please don't judge me.
Oh, Rapunzel would indeed be a great companion! What is your favorite companion by the way? I loved Amy and Donna. They were so epic!
I'm loving these FFF posts! Keep 'em coming 😀

I’m so excited for that, because I never have anyone to talk with about it. Yayyyyyyyy. 😀 😀 😀
I have to say that might have been where it started to get a little struggly after that, so I might forgive you/super not judge you. But I will say that once you keep going through it and get to this season, it will be amazing. Plus, you have books to read. So never judging. XD Keep me updated, though!!
And yesssssssssssss. My favorites are Amy & Rory (I loved Rory questioning everything) and Donna. Rose and Martha were okay, but I wasn’t super big fans. And I don’t think you’ve reached Clara, right?
And thankies! I’mma keep trying. 😉

I kinda liked Clara she definitely wasn’t my fave (Amy / Rory) but I dunno. I loved Bill and was so sad to see her go . I thought she got a good ending though. Can’t wait for the christmas special 🙂

    1. I just finished the season this weekend, and you’re so right about it being sad. I was super sad to see Bill go, but I’m excited that it kind of left it open for her to come back. Amy and Rory were also my favorites. ❤ Loved them so much. And I've never seen Jodie in anything before, but I am super stoked to have a female doctor. But definitely can't wait for the Christmas special either! 😀
