A Near-Future Retelling of Beauty and the Beast

Alainn’s father is not a bad man. He’s a genius and an inventor. When he’s hired to create the robot Rose, Alainn knows taking the money is a mistake.

Rose acts like a human. She looks exactly like Alainn. But, something in her comes out wrong.

To save her father from a five year prison sentence, Alainn takes Rose’s place. She says goodbye to the sun and goes to live in a tower no human is allowed to enter. She becomes the prisoner of a man no human is allowed to see.

Believing that a life of servitude lies ahead, Alainn finds a very different fate awaits her in the company of the strange, scarred recluse.

[This novel contains adult situations and is only suitable for readers who are 18+]

Erm, I’m not sure there was anything super wrong with it in a sense, but I just could NOT get behind the concept. Okay, sounds super werid, right? You’re all sitting there going, Mandy, if you couldn’t get behind the concept, then why in the book heck did you request this on Netgalley?

Okay, it was another one of those books that I put my own thoughts on what it was going to be onto the book without really reading the full description. I thought it would be Cinder except with Beauty and the Beast. I mean, there was androids, mechanics, and creepy robots. I was super sold. With the amazing results I had with TLC and Princess of the Tyrone in respects to futuristic fairytale retellings, I was sol.ddddddddddd. So sold.

However, what I got wasn’t quite what I wanted. The beginning was interesting enough. I was intrigued by the dynamic between mysterious man in the mansion, Alainn’s father going to prison, and the intricacies of the world that Stradling created. However, where they lost me was the robot aspect and the dynamics of the family.

The family dynamics were a total mess. I hated the father. I hated the brother – okay, I super hated him. I felt like the kooky inventor father aspect from Beauty and the Beast was lost from Beauty and the Beast. I wasn’t crazy about the new dynamic of this father, so I didn’t enjoy that.

And then there was the robot. Rose was all sorts of messed up. I was so not a fan of her. I just kept looking at her going, NO, NO, AND MORE NO. But I could handle a creepy robot. I’ve done it before in books and movies. However, what lost me was the fact that Alainn was going to the Beast’s house and pretending she was a robot. That’s right. – Alainn goes to live with the Beast pretending to be a robot servant for, like, two weeks or something because creepy robot Rose convinced her to do it in like 3 sentences.

Snow’s as disappointed Belle isn’t here for this, but I think we can all agree it’s for the best.

Um, um, erm, um, that’s something alright. I was just too creeped out by it. This girl had to pretend to be a robot and the Beast guy thinks she’s a robot. I AM CONCERNED. I get this could be intriguing to some people, but this is just not for me. It was far too creepy for me. Robots and me apparently don’t get along unless they are Iko. XD So I had to give it up because I couldn’t get behind this change in concept.

So, nothing super wrong – just a concept I was so not into. Therefore, no stars, and our DNF princess returns yet again!

  1. Oh we were going to read this – but looks like the story falls flat… Perhaps we will read this one day… But not today.. Not today! Plus our TBR is just way too long our minds just gonna explode…😁 We like a review that is honest when they DNF’ed it but don’t rate it(in stars). So readers can than make their own choices on whether it was good or not! Without being influenced by the low star rating (from people who haven’t even read it) or high star rating!

    1. The concept just feel flat for me. Me and robots are apparently not fully compatible. XD But lol, I totally know what you mean about both things. Since I only read such a short amount, I don’t think it’s fair to rate it with stars because you haven’t read it truly. I definitely agree.

      1. Robots do seem like a cool concept – but it looks like it hard to pull off! We do sometimes wonder if we should read a low star rated book – due to people being biased and being influenced by other people’s opinion and rating before having read it! But yeahh… It’s seems to be getting worse and we’re glad to find there ARE those who have some respect and manners for books 😊😊 🤓

      2. Yes! I super agree! Robots can go so many different ways. XD But yes! There is a lot of that recently. I know one of the bloggers that I follow on Goodreads rates every single book even if they only read a few pages. Drives me insane. XD

  4. Oh, no! Not another DNF! I’m so sorry, Mandy! We’ve got to get you out of this book slump! Your review is very well explained. This one wasn’t on my radar, so I’m just taking your word for it. 🙂

    1. IK. I’m hoping Kasie West will save the day tonight? But thank you. I accidentally stumbled upon it on Netgalley, and I have learned I need to research concepts better. Like, if people will fall in love with people pretending to be robots. o.o Apparently that is not in my good reading feels zone. XD

      1. Hahaha. I need to be better at really researching the books before I click request too. I’ve done it a few times, and then been so angry at myself when I was reading it. Like why did I do this to myself?! LOL. 🙂

  5. Oh no! I’m sorry you didn’t like this one! I have a copy too, so I guess I’ll find out my own thoughts on it eventually. I haven’t read Cinder though, so maybe I’ll have different expectations and will like it. The fact that the girl was convinced so quickly seems unrealistic, but I’m trying to keep an open mind!

Side note, I also really liked Princess of Tyrone!

    1. Yes, I really hope you will enjoy it! I have seen quite a few other people that have enjoyed it. I think I really was putting it up against Cinder and since it is one of my favorite books, it might have unfairly high expectations. XD But yes, super good lucks and can’t wait to see what you think!

And YES. It was so good! 😀

  6. Ok… Erm… I don’t get it? Why did she go and pretend to be a robot??? That makes NO SENSE 😦
I totally get why you didn’t like this, Mandy. It feels weird. It feels ridiculous, actually. My head hurts at how ridiculous it feels!
TLC vibes would be amazing but, oh well. Better luck with your next read, hon!

    1. Apparently her dad said he would make this guy a robot but he has to go off to jail so he can’t finish the robot so there is no robot to send over so to avoid going to jail or something, this one robot convinces her to be a robot. o.o And it literally takes her like four sentences and she’s like, oh, kk, that sounds pretty reasonable.
But thank you. I couldn’t quite figure it out, and I was a bit lost. Glad to know I wasn’t the only one.
      Thankies!!
