The Princesses Read: Rapunzel

There was actually a really intense duel between two particular Princesses this week, and goodness, I was convinced Mulan was totally going to be the leader. However, Rapunzel pulled a sneak attack and won the battle. I’m super impressed. As usual, here’s a little rehash of what we’re doing this week:

Each Saturday, I will be showcasing a lovely Disney Princess (or when they run out, some other Disney leading ladies and more) and showcasing what they might be picking up if they were reading YA today. It will be based off their likes, interests, personalities, and their storyline. At the end, I will also feature a book that the Princess would NOT be picking up and a section of books that are based off either the plot or original princess fairytale. Check out more info here on my original post! We’ve done Tiana, Belle, and Jasmine so far!

This week’s Princess is…Rapunzel!

Rapunzel is easily in the top 5 Princesses. She’s so much fun and sweet and adorable and I just want to give her a big ole hug. She is the embodiment of dreams and longing and the need for adventure. Rapunzel may not be strong physically but her strength comes from her emotional and mental strength from the isolation she surfaced at the hands of her mother. She’s funny, knows how to wield a good frying pan, and never stops dreaming. Her romance with Flynn was SO dreamy and gave me all the swoons – or should I say the smolders? 😉 Oh sigh. I’m just so happy thinking about it.

SO, IF JASMINE WAS AROUND TODAY INSTEAD OF A WHOLE NEW WORLD, WHAT YA BOOKS WOULD SHE PICK UP?

the-star-touched-queenThe Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi

Well, lanterns are kind of like stars, right? 😉 Chokshi’s writing kind of is like a work of art, so I definitely think that Rapunzel would SO be into that. Plus, she would definitely have a think for that constellation tapestry. o.o And weaving them into hair. It could make her hair even more golden. Also, there is a pretty epic horse in this novel that basically makes the whole second part of the novel, and I think Rapunzel would enjoy that since her dear friend Maximus is pretty saucy.

cinderCinder by Marissa Meyer

I’m not sure why Cinder keeps appearing in other Princesses’ posts, but I’m totally okay with that because it’s an amazing story. However, there are two main reasons for this novel being something I think would be beloved by Cinder. First, Rapunzel would totally understand the whole bad, controlling mother issues just like Cinder had. She would feel Cinder’s pain on a whole different level. Second, I think Rapunzel and Cinder would also connect on the whole I’m-a-long-lost-princess thing, which, you know, can be a struggle. XD

the-replacement-crushThe Replacement Crush by Lisa Brown Roberts

I feel like if Rapunzel had read this book in the tower and had actually had Internet access, after she sent out her request for help, she might have took up book blogging to pass the time. She loved reading her books over and over again, and she was a brilliant artist, so I could totally see her creating such pretty graphics on her blog. I think book would totally inspire her to do it…plus, there was a super adorable romance. Rapunzel has an adorable romance. They’ll love it. XD

six-of-crowsThe Wishing Heart by JC Welker OR Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo18161548_221893714977550_3789870156918816768_n(1)

I obviously need a good thief story, but I thought it would only be fair if I picked one. However, I couldn’t figure out which one I thought Rapunzel would enjoy more. I was obviously leaning more toward The Wishing Heart since it was quite lighter, Rebel was a bit more Flynnish, and there were a lot of magical creatures I think Rapunzel would enjoy. However, even though Six of Crows is quite a bit grittier, I feel like Rapunzel could like the gang. They’re brilliantly funny and during Kaz’s scheming face, I totally could see him doing some smoldering. And while Nina is cooking those waffles, I’m sure a frying pan could be involved as some point. 😉

wanderlostWanderlost by Jen Malone

Since Rapunzel was cooped up so long in the tower, I have a feeling she would clearly like to see the world – see all that it has to offer. I mean, obviously. In Wanderlost, the main character goes on a journey to some of the coolest sites in all of Europe. I think Rapunzel would definitely love going away to faraway lands and maybe even create a list of all the places she might want to one day visit. I definitely think this book would give Rapunzel the official traveling bug.

A BOOK MOVIE RAPUNZEL WOULD NOT PICK UP

Donnie Darko. There is a man in a creepy bunny suit in this movie. Rapunzel – fresh out of the tower – was quite scared of a bunny. I don’t think she would enjoy seeing an actual monster bunny thing in this movie. Might reignite the whole scared bunny thing…and she would totally have to listen to Flynn going, Oh, hey, remember that time you were scared of bunnies? I can already hear her groaning now. XD

WANT TO READ MORE ABOUT RAPUNZEL? HERE ARE A FEW YA RETELLINGS:

Obviously, the biggest one is Cress by Marissa Meyer. Literally I can’t help but think Rapunzel is Cress the entire time I watched the movie/think about the book. They are one in the same for me. So, if you enjoy the movie, it really is worth reading the first two books in the series to get to Cress to read the epic Rapunzel retelling. The only other Rapunzel retelling that I have read is The Golden Braid by Melanie Dickerson – which is Christian Fiction. That was an interesting retelling and it really got into the emotional complexities of the emotional abuse suffered by Rapunzel by her mother. However, it does get a bit heavy on the Christian aspect, so definitely be prepared for that (I was not o.o). Towering by Alex Flinn is another YA one as well! Here is a list of other retellings!

Next Week?

To be decided! Maybe a hint will appear sometime in the next few days…or just a complete surprise! We will see!

What do you think? What do you think Rapunzel would read? Do you have a favorite Rapunzel retelling? How swoony is Flynn Rider? How adorable is their story? Let’s discuss in the comments below!

  1. Is it weird that I now consider Cinder, Cress, and Winter to actually be the original princesses instead of the actual Disney ones? 😂 Marissa Meyer is seriously messing with my head. Great choices with Wanderlost, Six Of Crows and Cinder! Haven’t read any of the other books yet, but I’ll be adding them to my tbr asap. And I NEED to add as many retellings to my tbr as possible!! 😍

    1. Omigosh, I SO feel you, Nadwa. I had the roughest one with this one, because I kept thinking Rapunzel was Cress. I was like, ooh, I need to find a book with a tree in it because Cress wants to see a tree…and then I’m like, wait, Rapunzel has seen trees…they are outside her window. Cress is not the same. XD But she has totally messed with me too. We need to write her a stern letter. XD But yes!! The rest of them were great, and for sure about retellings. o.o I’m in TLC withdrawals with you. XD (I’ll try and spot a few on Goodreads and send them over to you if I see any good ones :D)

      1. OH MY GOD 😂😂 Yes, yes yes! I’d love that! Please do 😍 Actually, my little TLC-obsessed sister has already beat me to it and sent a fangirling (plus typos)- filled email to Marissa and she replied to her (let me tell you, hearing my sister squeal and scream for days wasn’t very comfortable) 😂 She addressed my sister by her first name and actually used emojis so she was like, totally cool. So hey, we should actually consider writing her that letter, I think she’d be flattered to know that she messed up with our heads like that 😂

      2. Yes, I will definitely do it then!! 😀 More fairytale retellings = amazing. And AHAHAHA that’s amazing but I feel bad that for all our fangirling, we got beaten out by your sister. But that’s SO amazing that she actually responded and did all of that. That definitely should be something we look into, because I think so too! XD I like this idea. 😀

    1. AHAHAHA. That’s amazing, Sydney…I mean, Rapunzel, and I totally think you’re right then! XD And Rapunzel is such an epic princess too, so it’s totally a very good thing to be the same person as her. XD

    1. I agree that it was super sweet! I loved what she did with the whole complexities of Rapunzel and her mother too – I feel like that gets lost in a lot of Rapunzel retellings. And ah, gotcha. It was only my second time reading Christian fic, and I’m super not used to it being infused in, so I might have thought it was too much for that reason. Good to know, though! 🙂
      Thanks so much!!

  2. YES I LOVE RAPUNZEL! TSTQ is perfect for Rapunzel (and Maximus), the magical writing of Choshki’s would definitely enchant them! I feel like Cinder is required reading for the all the Disney princess tbh. Same with SoC especially those princesses who have thieves in their lives! Like Flynn Rider who is super swoony especially with his smolder….best OTP moments e v e r!

    1. YAYYYYYY. You were the deciding factor!! I definitely think they would be so enchanted by her world. And lol, I’m slowly trying to work Cinder into everything. It’s working so far. XD And yessssssssssssss. He was so wonderful in it too. So swoony. So funny. So not wanting to sing.

    1. I totally agree with you. Every time I look at tags, I get so overwhelmed with all the books I need to read in the world. XD Omigosh, Kate, that’s totally what I get for being lazy and copying. I shall totally fix it. Thanks so much!!

  3. Rapunzel is one of my favorite princesses! And Soc is one of my favorite books! I am really getting into the TSTQ series too though and LOVING that. I can definitely see Rapunzel and Jasmine both digging these ones. <3<3<3

    1. Then it worked out perfectly, lol! Rapunzel is just amazing, though. And yes! It is such a pretty series, and I hope you super enjoy!! And lol, thank you! I definitely think they could see a whole new world in those (I’m ashamed of the Disney pun in there).

  4. Wonderful post Mandy! I am obsessed with the Tangled movie and I loved getting all these new recommendations 😛
and oh my, ever since I started my blog, Cinder has been following me EVERYWHERE! There isn’t a day when I don’t see it mentioned in someone’s post and I really wasn’t interested in reading it but I can’t seem to escape it! 😀

    1. Thanks so much, Jackie!! It is literally so cute. When I rewatched it a few years ago, this was literally the movie that respurred the insane Princess love. It was so good that way. XD
And LOL. XD It won’t leave you alone. I will say that I had the same reaction to it – It did NOT interest me at all. Cyborgs? Future? That cover? Nope, I was not interested, but after seeing it around everywhere and so many fantastic reviews, I caved, and it was the best book decision I ever made. XD

      1. Well, I’m glad that happened! 😀
And those are literally all the reasons why the book doesn’t interest me 😀 😀 But I am not ashamed to admit that I gave in…… and I’ve just added the book to my Goodreads TBR 😛

      2. YAYYYYYYYYYYYYY! I’m really hoping you will like it, because I really thought I would hate it yet it totally worked out so brilliantly. And it’s one of those series that actually gets better as you go on? Which rarely happens.

  5. Oh I could totally see Rapunzel reading any of these! It always surprises me which books you come up with for the princesses… There’s always some detail about them that I would not have thought of and that makes a great connection! Awesome job, Mandy 😀
I think I need to read The Replacement Crush for when I’m feeling cutesy hahaha
And I totally thought of Rapunzel while reading Cress! And Thorne as Flynn! I think the author had them in her mind as well… Which was awesome! They’re so epic T_T
I think your post has an error, though. It reads: “SO, IF JASMINE WAS AROUND TODAY INSTEAD OF A WHOLE NEW WORLD, WHAT YA BOOKS WOULD SHE PICK UP?” Wrong princess XD
Awesome post as always, darling! ❤

    1. Awh, thanks so much, Sophie!!! That always makes me feel so happy!
I definitely think so! It was adorable and the book blogging addition was pretty cool too.
BUT YESSSSSS. They’re both literally the same people in my mind…which is perhaps why I love them both so much?
AND OH NO. I haven’t fixed that yet?? D: Bad Book Princess…copying and pasting without doing it right.
      But thanks so much, Sophie!!

  6. I think Rapunzel might like to read Dealing With Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede. It’s funny, about an untraditional princess, and the way that Cimorene (the princess) deals with the knights that come to rescue her is hilarious.

I don’t think I’ve read many, if any, Rapunzel retellings. ^^; Oops. I do like Tangled, though. It had a lot of really great songs; the one with her and Flynn (I See the Light) was so romantic.

(Just a quick note: you’ve got Jasmine listed as the princess just above the book recommendation of The Star Touched Queen.) 😉

    1. Ooooh, I’ve never heard of that book, but I think I totally need to add it to Rapunzel’s and my TBR. XD That sounds amazing. And I really have only read 2. I feel like there are a few out there, but they just get massively hidden. XD But yes. The music for that movie was amazing. You’re so right about I See The Light as well.
AND OH NO. I’ve tried to fix it a few times, but apparently Jasmine just wants to stay. XD Thank you for letting me know, though!!

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Yes! Maybe that’s why Jasmine keeps reappearing when she’s not supposed to. They do both have amazing hair and both long to do something more, so maybe that’s where it went wrong with the name things? XD
