The Oh-Wait-When-Did-That-Get-On-My-TBR-List Post

Do you ever go through your TBR (especially on Goodreads) and find yourself going, oh, wait, THAT’S on my TBR? Since when? And what even is it about??? Recently, I found two books that sounded SO intriguing to me while going through some blogs and people being excited about them, and I’m like, OMG, YES, I MUST RUSH OVER AND ADD THEM…only to find out that I’ve had them sitting on a shelf since summer of 2016. o.o Here are four books that I found in my 2017 mid through late year shelves that I found through accidental scans that I literally had no clue I had wanted to read. XD

A Million Junes by Emily Henry

Romeo and Juliet meets One Hundred Years of Solitude in Emily Henry’s brilliant follow-up to The Love That Split the World, about the daughter and son of two long-feuding families who fall in love while trying to uncover the truth about the strange magic and harrowing curse that has plagued their bloodlines for generations.

In their hometown of Five Fingers, Michigan, the O’Donnells and the Angerts have mythic legacies. But for all the tall tales they weave, both founding families are tight-lipped about what caused the century-old rift between them, except to say it began with a cherry tree.

Eighteen-year-old Jack “June” O’Donnell doesn’t need a better reason than that. She’s an O’Donnell to her core, just like her late father was, and O’Donnells stay away from Angerts. Period.

But when Saul Angert, the son of June’s father’s mortal enemy, returns to town after three mysterious years away, June can’t seem to avoid him. Soon the unthinkable happens: She finds she doesn’t exactly hate the gruff, sarcastic boy she was born to loathe.

Saul’s arrival sparks a chain reaction, and as the magic, ghosts, and coywolves of Five Fingers conspire to reveal the truth about the dark moment that started the feud, June must question everything she knows about her family and the father she adored. And she must decide whether it’s finally time for her—and all of the O’Donnells before her—to let go.

I saw this on someone’s Twitter feed a few weeks ago, and I was like oh, eh, I’m not quite captivated by the hazy and faraway picture. I don’t think I ever wanted to read that…only to accidentally find it when I was doing this post. Oops? I could have been in a giveaway for that too. D: Well, drats. But I mean, doesn’t that sound super interesting? GHOSTS. COOL TOWN NAMES. A SARCASTIC BOY. Oh, I’m loving it already. How could I ever forget you, June, especially since there are a million of you?

Among the Red Stars by Gwen C. Katz

World War Two has shattered Valka’s homeland of Russia, and Valka is determined to help the effort. She knows her skills as a pilot rival the best of the men, so when an all-female aviation group forms, Valka is the first to sign up.

Flying has always meant freedom and exhilaration for Valka, but dropping bombs on German soldiers from a fragile canvas biplane is no joyride. The war is taking its toll on everyone, including the boy Valka grew up with, who is fighting for his life on the front lines.

As the war intensifies and those around her fall, Valka must decide how much she is willing to risk to defend the skies she once called home.

Inspired by the true story of the airwomen the Nazis called Night Witches, Gwen C. Katz weaves a tale of strength and sacrifice, learning to fight for yourself, and the perils of a world at war.

This was on a lot of blogs a few weeks back, and each time I saw it on another blog I followed, I got even more excited about it. I just had to get over to Goodreads to add it…only to realize that I totally had it on since forever ago. BUT LOOK AT HOW EPIC IT LOOKS. NIGHT WITCHES AKA FIERCE LADY PILOTS. IN WWII. Oh, sigh, I’m so sold. Um, can October get here sooner?

now is everything

Now is Everything by Amy Giles

Read the book New York Times bestselling author Amber Smith calls “powerful and haunting,” and acclaimed author Peter Brown Hoffmeister calls “beautiful and sad.”

Now Is Everything is a stirring debut novel told in alternating THEN and NOW chapters, perfect for Sarah Dessen and Jennifer Niven fans, about what one girl is willing to do to protect her past, present, and future.

The McCauleys look perfect on the outside. But nothing is ever as it seems, and this family is hiding a dark secret.

Hadley McCauley will do anything to keep her sister safe from their father. But when Hadley’s forbidden relationship with Charlie Simmons deepens, the violence at home escalates, culminating in an explosive accident that will leave everyone changed.

When Hadley attempts to take her own life at the hospital post-accident, her friends, doctors, family, and the investigator on the case want to know why. Only Hadley knows what really happened that day, and she’s not talking.

I literally had no clue what this book was about let alone that it even existed until I created this post. I’m not sure how or where I found it – probably in a half asleep Goodreads adding binge – and it doesn’t even really sound like a book I would have added without some sort of push from something. I’m not quite sure, but it has a bundle of five star reviews so far, and I do think it has potential to be an intriguing mental health book. But seriously, I am concerned that mysterious books like this just randomly appear in the TBR…but also kind of thankful? XD

The Wood by Chelsea Bobulski

After her father goes missing in the woods that they protect, Winter tries to seek the truth in what happened, why the wood is changing, and what it all has to do with the arrival of a mysterious stranger in this thrilling YA debut.

When Winter’s dad goes missing during his nightly patrol of the wood, it falls to her to patrol the time portals and protect the travelers who slip through them. Winter can’t help but think there’s more to her dad’s disappearance than she’s being told.

She soon finds a young man traveling in the wood named Henry who knows more than he should. He believes if they can work together to find his missing parents, they could discover the truth about Winter’s dad.

The wood is poisoned, changing into something sinister—torturing travelers lost it. Winter must put her trust in Henry in order to find the truth and those they’ve lost.

Bobulski’s eerie debut is filled with friendship, family, and the responsibilities we choose and those we do not.

I saw this picture a few times going around Twitter, but did I think I would happen to see it again on my Goodreads TBR? Nope, definitely not. I seriously have Goodreads adding amnesia. But it sounds so ridiculously thrilling and creepy and FUN CREEPY WOODSY. I LOVE ME SOME CREEPY WOODS…even though I pee my pants a lot of the time with them. D: Plus, this main character shares the name with one of the great TLC ladies. How could I forget that??

SO, what books magically appear on your TBR? Have any of these? Are you excited for any of these? Let’s discuss in the comments below!

  1. Well, I’ve now added The Woods and Among the Red Stars to mine now! I definitely find books I forgot about on my wishlists/tbrs on various websites. I give my family my wishlist around my birthday and Christmas, and almost every time, I receive a book I don’t remember having on my list!

  2. The magic that is the TBR list on Goodreads. I swear, every time I open it there are more books on there than I remember adding. TBR faeries, perhaps? Either way, Among the Red Stars sounds fascinating and it is going on my list now.

    1. Ahahahaha, I SUPER agree. They just appear. I’m so down for believing in the TBR faeries, because there is no way I clearly added all of these. XD But yes! I’ve seen some really good early reviews for it, too! 🙂

  3. I always find myself knocking books off my TBR. It’s one thing to not remember books that are there, but sometimes I re-read the synopsis and I’m not interested in the least! I guess that’s a testament to my ever-changing tastes.

    1. I totally agree! I did a big knockoff a few months ago, and cleared off at least 100 books…but I think I probably need to do that again, because as you said, tastes change and soon enough, it’s not interesting again.

      1. It’s frustrating to realize you could want to read a book enough to make note of it only to cross it off of that list weeks or months later. Doesn’t make sense!

    1. Oh no! I remember reading your review before, but since I was convinced that I didn’t want to read it, I definitely didn’t read it with those eyes. I’m definitely going to be pushing it down the TBR with that review. D:
But lol, SO true. With 1000, I can imagine. XD I thought I was bad with 500 and losing a bunch but I’m sure with that it would be quite hard. XD

      1. I have not but it’s been on my TBR for a while. But I will definitely move that on the TBR higher up instead. Thanks so much for the advice!
And lol, ik. xD Every time I even try to trim it down, it gets filled right back up. D: Book blogging is rough on it. XD

      2. YES. Half of the time, I’m like, there really can’t be EVEN more books out there…and then as you said, someone comes up with ten more books you didn’t know existed but sound amazing. XD

      3. It helps when you follow bloggers from around the world because then there’s the chance of hearing about books that are publicized more in their country than in your own. Like, PaperFury: her blog is amazing on it’s own, but she also has some great recommendations for Australian based stories as well specifically.

      4. Oh gods, yes! And the fact that most UK books are paperback rather than hardcover like the US! My husband actually tends to prefer the UK covers while I prefer the US hardcover format, so buying books can be a difficult decision. 😅

      5. Yes! I never knew that was a thing either. Or that the covers usually change for them. But oh gosh. XD That has got to be a struggle for some of them. I agree with you for hardcover though. 😉

  4. Hahaha this happens to me quite a lot! I’m like, super excited, telling people I’m so adding it to my TBR, only to be like “Wait. Did we have this conversation before? SO WHY IS IT HERE???” *proceeds to purify all the Goodreads shelves along with some weird chanting, just in case they have a life of their own* Super creepy indeed!
    Another lovely post, Mandy 🙂

    1. Ahahahahah, YES. It’s super sad to go add it to the TBR and then saw it sitting there for a couple of months. XD But yes, I need to do the same. o.o I swear they multiply. But thanks so much, Sophie!
