The Princesses Read: Belle

Second week, and my Princess series is still going strong – yes, there was a little bit a doubt, because we all know I actually have struggles with sticking to a schedule. D:

Missed what The Princesses Read is all about? Here’s a bit of a refresh:

Each Saturday, I will be showcasing a lovely Disney Princess (or when they run out, some other Disney leading ladies and more) and showcasing what they might be picking up if they were reading YA today. It will be based off their likes, interests, personalities, and their storyline. At the end, I will also feature a book that the Princess would NOT be picking up and a section of books that are based off either the plot or original princess fairytale. Check out more info here on my original post!

Now, I gave a hint of a picture of some beautiful roses last week in Tiana’s post, trying to hint at two possible princesses it could be, and everyone that guesses literally got it right on the first try. So, my hinting is apparently really obvious. Good to know you won’t have to worry about finding out what princess is every week. So, in case, you didn’t guess, this week’s princess is…

BELLE!

That’s right – we’re talking about the official Princess of book lovers and bookworms everywhere! She’s smart, strong, a total book lover – and if you saw the new live-action movie, an epic inventor. Plus, I only wish I could do epic things with my hair like she does. She was the first half hair bun wearer, and I’m so jealous of how good it looks. Also, can we discuss how she was the only brunette Princess before Moana? Anyway, I’m getting so off track. I know Belle is the favorite Princess of many bloggers out there, and she rightly should be since she totally gets how each of us feel about our lovely books.

So, if Belle was around today instead of pre-Revolutionary France, what YA books would she pick up?

Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

I don’t believe it is ever specified in the movies that Beauty and the Beast’s setting is France, but it is – especially before the French Revolution, which will take place a few years later. In Anna and the French Kiss, the setting is the glorious Paris, and Perkins does an amazing job of including a lot of the sites and sounds. In the live-action Beauty and the Beast, Belle wishes so badly to go to Paris as well – well, for totally different reasons than Anna, but still. This book would totally get Belle excited for the setting, but I also feel like she would love the adorable feels as well. Does anyone else feel like Belle is a total closet romance nerd? I feel it.

Scarlet by Marissa Meyer

Oh, look, another book with a French setting. I’m so taking the easy way out with this one. XD But, honestly, I picked this book for two other reasons for Belle. 1) Belle would totalllllllllly love Scarlet’s fierceness. She’s sassy, bold, and strong. She stands up to some pretty intense beasties – um, hybrid wolf creatures with pretty sharp teeth – just like Belle does to the Beast. I think Belle would totally fangirl over that. 2) Scarlet ends up falling in love with the big bad wolf – just like Belle does with the Beast. Belle would totally get Scarlet in this aspect as well, and get down with the feels since I imagine Wolf is as fluffy on the inside as Beast.

This book is a retelling of the classic story, The Phantom of the Opera. Wait, let me guess, me, IT HAS FRENCH INSPIRATION? Yes, it does, but sooooo not the reason I picked it – although I bet Belle would appreciate it. But it is the classic story that could mirror Belle’s story – Belle falls in love with not the best looking guy (Christine and Erik); there is a clearer, handsomer choice like Gaston (Raoul although he’s the best and not a jerk); roses; and father figures messing things up. I totally imagine Belle would be infatuated with the original story, and totally need to pick up this retelling stat – especially since there is no Raoul figure around.

Okay, raise your hands if you think this one has some French inspiration in it? YOU WOULD BE WRONG, BECAUSE I FINALLY CONTROLLED MYSELF. Also, raise your other hand if you think that if Belle was around today and, you know, real she would be a book blogger? I totally could see her belonging to this community, and truly, I see so much of her in you bloggers! In this book, the lead heroine is a total bookworm and runs her own book blog and book club – two things Belle would totally be doing. The only thing missing was a library – BECAUSE LIBRARIES ARE CLEARLY BELLE’S JAM – but there was an adorable bookstore that plays an integral part. Belle would so sign herself up for this book stat!

Erm…LIBRARIES. That’s all I need to say about this book. XD Belle = lover of libraries. She fangirls so hard once she sees Beast’s libraries – and I mean, who doesn’t? D: IT IS THE PLACE OF DREAMS. This book concerns our heroine getting stuck in a library for a weekend with an adorably troubled young man. Her and Beast spend some swoon-worthy time in the library and totally work on their relationship through books – just like how Dex and Autumn do in this book. Not only would this book bring her the feels, she totally would go back to her own adorable times with Beast. Ah, book love…

A Book Belle Would NOT Pick Up

Marie Antoinette: Princess of Versailles by Kathryn Lansky

Ugh, I know, not another YA book again. I’m failing. But I’m very sure that Belle would not be picking up this book anytime because you know, Marie Antoinette had some French Revolution issues…you know, the whole let them eat cake thing and then the whole beheading thing. Basically, with the French Revolution, if you were a royal, your head literally might have been on the chopping block…and you know, Beast was a French Prince…just saying. D: D: D: So, Belle would definitely not want to read about anything about that.

Want to read more about Belle? Here are a few YA Retellings:

Hunted by Meagan Spooner, As Old as Time by Liz Braswell, and Lost in a Book by Jennifer Donnelly are just the latest editions to the YA retellings of Beauty and the Beast. Trust me, there are a LOT, though. I haven’t read many of them yet, but I definitely have a tonnnnn on the TBR, though. A Court of Thorns and Roses is one of the very few I have, though. Here is a Goodreads list as well of more Beauty and the Beast retellings. I have a lot more of my Goodreads, so let me know if you want any more!

Now, for a little hint for next week:

These white flowers look like a certain type of flower…which relates to a certain Princess. 😉 Can you guess? Also, why do I keep using flowers as my hints??

So…what do you think? Do you think Belle would be reading these? What other books do you think Belle would or would not be reading? What Princess can’t you wait to see up here? Let’s discuss in the comments below!

      1. Hahaha so black haired princess huh? Mulan? Perhaps…wait flowers – is it Jasmine? Don’t know why we didn’t think so first – mind just went totally blank LOL… 😂

    1. AH, ASHLEY, I totally forgot about the Shakespeare love. But you are totally right. She would still love Shakespeare, and I’m sure she would be entertained a bit by all of the retellings of it. But you’re SO right.

  1. Part of me wants to guess Snow White as being the next featured princess, but another part of me feels like it’s Mulan for some reason. This is much harder to guess than last week’s.

  2. Another great Princess Reads post Mandy! I can totally see Belle reading these kinds of books, especially those with the French influence or anything to do with libraries! XD I can’t wait until next week…though I don’t know who it could be! Your hints definitely stump me LOL!

    1. Thanks so much, Rendz!! 😀 And ahhh yay! Success! 😀 It almost seemed like Belle came too easy for me, and I was a bit worried. XD And lol, that seems to be the theme today. I went from too easy to apparently far too hard. XD Oops. If I say thief, does it help? 😉

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Maybe…………….I…………….know…………..who…………it……………is………….now! Does this thief share any characteristics with a certain captain we love to talk about? *cough*

      2. …OH NO. I DID IT AGAIN, RENDZ. I just always imagine Flynn in my head now as a captain of spaceship (THORNE *SHAKES FIST*) that I forget about his extracurricular activities. I literally can’t think of Flynn any other way. XD Genies. Genies are part of this princess. I soooooooooo failed you. *throws self in a corner to have a dramatic princess cry* Why are there so many Disney thieves??

      3. LOLOLOLOL! *I’m actually laughing so hard, too many Disney men have thief as an extracurricular activity!* Okay I DEFINITELY know who is up next week for sure! I’m pumped! #MakeWayForPrinceAli 😉

  3. Shakespeare definitely, especially if Belle loved Romeo and Juliet!

And A Tale as Old as Time is such a good BatB retelling. I particularly like how it resolves a plot hole in the original film!

    1. OMG, EMMA, YES. How could I forget about Shakespeare? :O I totally fell apart with that one. D: But I super agree. There is enough Shakepspeare retellings out in YA that she would love.
And it’s a good one?? YAY. I read her take on the Sleeping Beauty one and I wasn’t so crazy about it, but if you give it the stamp of approval, I will totally have to give it another chance. 😀 I’m excited now. 😀 Is that your favorite retelling or do you have more?

      1. I haven’t read the Sleeping Beauty one yet so I can’t compare them, but I’d be biased towards the Beauty and the Beast retelling anyway considering it’s my favourite film and such! It’s also the only one I know that is heavily based around the film than the original French tale.

Now that you’ve put your faith in me, I hope it doesn’t disappoint. I do have a review of it up (possibly under February) so if you are interested, that could be a good starting place. 😀💜

I’ve not read many other BatB retellings but Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge is a good one. I’m also about to start reading Hunted by Meagan Spooner. It had been getting a lot of hype at the minute on booktube so I’m excited to see what it is like.

      2. Okay, I’m going to go hunt down that review. 🙂 The Sleeping Beauty got set in this weird alternate universe thing, but if this focuses more on the film and a big plot hole, then I’m super down or it.
And ahhhh gotcha. Hunted is super what I’m looking forward too, so I can’t WAIT to see what your thoughts are. 😀 I’ve seen a lottttt of good reviews on it. 🙂

      3. It’s on both book and Disney blogs so it shouldn’t be too hard to find. And In terms of the plot hole, it is more of an explanation than a direct focus. I know I mention it in the review but I can’t remember if it is spoiled or not! The setting of As Old As Time is kind of alternate but I don’t think it is too far away from its original French setting to be classed as weird. I could be wrong though, and now you have me really wanting to read the Sleeping Beauty book.

      4. Lol, yeah, the whole premise of the Sleeping Beauty one was what if Sleeping Beauty was awake and dreaming the whole time when she’s under the sleep spell. It was interesting although it did get a little too off at times. But definitely interesting. XD And I read the review and it sounds SUPER good. I’ll definitely be picking it up. 😀

    1. LOL. Oh gosh, it is. D: I loved all of your guesses, and those make far more sense than what I was going for. XD This Princess does have black hair like Snow White, though. XD
AND yes!! It is such an amazing series. :O

      1. Jasmine has hair goals, for sure. I’m also jealous of her room. On a slightly unrelated note, I found an artist on Society6 that made a print of Carpet, and you can buy rugs on their site now.. so guess what rug I’m getting for my room? Yup.

  4. Oooooh I love this post!! Ahah Anna and the French Kiss would be so great for Belle, the France setting would be so great and oh my gosh I totally think she’s a romance fan haha. ❤ I haven't read By Your Side, but from what I've heard it would totally be a good pick for her as well. 😀

  6. This is such a great idea for a post, I love it!! It combines two of my favourite things – Disney princesses and books! I never thought of Beauty and the Beast being set in pre-prerevolutionary France- I hope the beast survives it 😮

  7. Ahh yay what a lovely post! ❤️
I can’t believe I still haven’t read Anna and the French Kiss yet but I can totally see Belle reading it!
AND OMG!! By Your Side sounds like an i n c r e d i b l e book that I NEED to read! So thanks for that recommendation 😉
hmm, I have no clue who the next princess could be *oopsies* I guess I’ll just have to wait until next week to see 😛

    1. Thanks so much, Jackie!! 😀
:O I can’t believe it either. XD It took me foreverrrr to read it too, since I got scared with all the hype. It was a good contemp read, though.
AND YES. It totally got me into the Kasie West addiction stage. It’s fluffy, adorable, and SO cute.
And yes, I totally failed with my clue this week. XD A magic lamp might be a hint, though? 😉

  8. These were some great choices for Belle! You go, Mandy! 😀 I wouldn’t have thought about them at all hahaha
My knowledge of flowers is close to zero… SO I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT FLOWER THAT IS T_T But the only princess who’s named after a flower is Jasmine… So… Jasmine? I FAIL SO HARD AT THIS XD
Anyway, can’t wait for the next Princess post! ❤

    1. LOL, thanks so much, Sophie! I tried. Well, actually I didn’t try that hard since Belle was a bit easy being a booknerd. But still. BUT NO. YOU GOT IT, SOPHIE! I tricked everyone else on accident. D:

  9. She might would like Bellamy and the Brute by Alicia Michaels. It is a twist on the original beauty and the beast but more of a real world feel, except for the ghost. It has mystery and romance. I personally loved this book. (I don’t know if anyone else mentioned this book. I didn’t read the comments.)

    1. Omigosh, this comment totally got lost! I’m so sorry for the major delay. But I have heard of that, and I’m super glad to know that you enjoyed it because it sounds fantastic. I definitely think she would enjoy that one because I think she could totally have an interest in ghosts too? So sorry again for missing this! D:
