The Princesses Read: Tiana

Dun, dun, dunnnn! *princess trumpet playing in the background…or should I say, alligator because Louis should clearly be rocking it here*

Today is the day that we’ve all be waiting for…or really, kind of, maybe been waiting for since Tuesday when I came up with my post. So, it kind of loses a bit of its oomph. Anyway, today is the beginning of a new segment on Book Princess Reviews, called The Princesses Read! Each Saturday, I will be showcasing a lovely Disney Princess (or when they run out, some other Disney leading ladies and more) and showcasing what they might be picking up if they were reading YA today. It will be based off their likes, interests, personalities, and their storyline. At the end, I will also feature a book that the Princess would NOT be picking up and a section of books that are based off either the plot or original princess fairytale. Check out more info here on my original post!

Without further ado, our very first Princess is…TIANA!

Tiana instantly became one of my Top Five Disney Princesses when I saw The Princess and the Frog a couple of years ago. She is so independent, caring, fierce, and hard-working. She works a few different jobs in New Orleans, as she is saving up money to open up her own restaurant just like her dad wanted. She is so ridiculously hard-working unlike a certain little flirty frog prince, and her baking/cooking sounds amazing. She never gives up, and her story is such an inspiring one. Plus I mean, there is epic songs, adorable talking animals, swoony moments, and everything else good.

So, what would Tiana be reading today if she picked up some YA books?

I definitely think Tiana would pick up this book, because it would bring back a lot of memories for her. This book is set in a wooden camp with some pools of waters with wonderful friendship making between the lead, Lucy, and her wonderful friend group. Therefore, Tiana can think back to all those lovely times she had almost getting eaten in the swamp…er, wait. All those times she was making friends in the swamp. Yes, yes, that’s much better. Also, the lead dreamboat, Henry, plays the trumpet, which will remind her of her favorite friend…um, alligator friend, Louis and her musical prince, Naveen.

Heartless by Marissa Meyerheartless

I know what you’re thinking: wrong Disney lady, Mandy. Get a grip. XD However, there is no question that Tiana loves to bake/cook. Her most famous dish? Those amazing beignets. The leading lady is Heartless, Cath, loves to bake as well. I’m sure her and Cath (well, Cath before she went evil like Dr. Facilier) would connect wonderfully, and Tiana would love all the recipes and ideas Cath comes up with when she’s baking. Although Tiana would probably not enjoy the uses of pumpkin in this novel – they just weren’t very practical. 😉

Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys

Ah, yes, the forgotten novel of Ruta Sepetys even though it is SO good. Tiana would definitely love this book. It’s based in the 1950s French Quarter of New Orleans, which is her home city and love. Not only does it just have the draw of the beloved city, it also has a strong heroine who has a dream as well. Although Josie is wishing to get out of New Orleans why Tiana is wishing to stay, both Tiana and Josie are hard-working ladies with fierce dreams that they will do anything to get them. Tiana will definitely connect with Josie, and I have a feeling she’ll love it. Plus there is a bit of a New Orleans underground in here that – while not magical – it can be kind of like Dr. Facilier’s creepiness.

Jackaby by William Ritter

This seems like a very odd choice for Tiana because there really isn’t too much mystery/werewolf/old London vibe to her story. However, one of the more entertaining parts of the book involves how Abigail comes to be Jackaby’s assistant. His previous assistant had been turned into a duck accidentally by magic…much like how poor Tiana was as well. I think by now, she hopefully will look back at her time as a frog as a funny experience, much like how you would go, “OH, remember that time we were frogs, Naveen? HAHAHA…still hate you -_-” Er, maybe not. But I feel like she could connect a bit to that, and perhaps would think of Jackaby like a Mama Odie figure since he is a supernatural helper/detective man.

peeledPeeled by Joan Bauer

Literally, I feel like this book was about apples. Just apples – oh, and some mystery – but mainly about apples. This town was filled with apple puns, recipes, actual apples, and more. I feel like Tiana would pick up this book, get some apple inspiration to bake/cook something with it, and then go eh and put it back down. But there is a villain that is kind of cartoonish, so you know, maybe she might be entertained. XD

Bonus Book: The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton

Clearly, I haven’t read this book yet, since it comes out in 2018. However, I was reading the review/summary, and I definitely think it would definitely interest Tiana. According to one review, the descriptions of the food is AMAZING (which Tiana would be obsessed with), it has an epicly strong heroine (the movie is full of fierce leading ladies especially Mama Odie and Tiana), it is based in Orléans (correct me if I’m wrong but this is the French city New Orleans was based off of), and according to Roshani Chokshi, “dances between the fine lines of glittering, glamorous and gruesome”…which The Princess and the Frog does at times (I’m looking you, Dr. Facilier for the gruesome parts). Tiana totally might be tempted to pick this book up…and I totally am. :O

A BOOK TIANA WOULD NOT READ:

there was an old lady

Clearly, this is not YA, but I couldn’t help myself. If Tiana saw this, she would hop away from this book so fast. It would remind her of the days that flies actually seemed and looked tasted instead of the amazing food she was actually making like gumbo. And then it might remind her of her dear firefly, Ray. And then she might get sad. This book just needs to stay away from Tiana.

More Frog & The Princess Stories

frogkisser

Frogkisser! is really the only book I’ve read with a strong Princess and the Frog vibe to it. I mean, Anya, goes around kissing frogs…although Tiana’s frogkissing was a total mistake. Click here, though,if you would like to check out a YA list of Princess and the Frog retellings from Goodreads!

So, what do you think? Do you Tiana would be picking up these books? What other books do you think Tiana would be reading if she was into YA? Do you know any good Princess and the Frog retellings? Is Tiana your favorite Princess? Let’s discuss in the comments below!

Also…here’s a hint for the very next Princess that will be coming this week! Think you know? She will officially be revealed earlier in the week.

Psst…they’re roses! :O 😉 …at least I’m pretty sure they are. D:

      1. Yes! I was trying to get some people thinking about Sleeping Beauty too since her name was Briar Rose for a hot second. But it definitely fits so much more for Belle. 😀

  1. Haha! This is a fun post Mandy! And though I haven’t read any of the books you mentioned, I’m pretty sure a lady like Tiana would definitely pick it up. 😀 And is next week’s princess Belle? I thought of sleeping beauty when I see the rose then I remembered that it wasn’t a thorn that put her to sleep. XD I need to refresh my Disney Princess memories. Haha! XD

    1. Awh, thanks so much, Jannin! 😀 I appreciate it. 😀 AND OKAY, THANK YOU. I wanted someone to guess Sleeping Beauty as well because she did have a Rose in her name and there were a lot of thorns involved. But yes, you were totally right with Belle. So you actually got both of the things I was going for. XD So you were totally onto something.:D

    1. Thanks so much, Erynn! I really appreciate it. 😀 And sometimes I try…sometimes I’m avoiding doing actual things I’m supposed to and just scheme up ways to use more Princesses. XD But thanks so much again. 😀

  2. Love this! This was very entertaining Mandy, it also made me very hungry since a lot of the books had themes of food! Tiana would definitely enjoy those reads AND she would definitely stay away from There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly! I actually LOL’d when I read that! I cannot wait to read Frogkisser and I am even more excited to read about next weeks princess!

    1. I KNOW. I literally went and had some food after I did this post. XD And ahahaha. XD I had gone on a Childhood book finding binge a while ago on Goodreads and when I was going through my shelves for these, I was like…you really shouldn’t do this me, but…it’s so calling. XD But yes, it was super cute, Rendz, and thankies!! ❤ ❤

    1. Lol, it’s always so exciting to spot Jackaby anywhere because it’s so underrepresented but then always interesting when you haven’t read anything else. XD But yes, Kate, you’re 2 for 2 this week for guessing. 😀

      1. Yes! Beastly Bones was SUPER good as well. :O I liked it just as much as Jackaby, which I thought would never happen. You’re going to majorly enjoy…and have to let me know when you do it so I can fangirl over it with you. XD

    1. Thanks so much, Krysti! XD I try. XD I have to keep up with the gals over at YA and Wine and their creative branding. 😉 And YES. Speaking of evil Goodreads shelves, I had this one in my 2017 shelf and got so excited for it…only to realize it needed to be in 2018. XD But total agreement. 😀

      1. Oooooh. I think I technically have 4 or 5 books that are 2018 but I snuck a few onto 17 and just have one lone one sitting on the 2018 shelf. XD But yes, you and I must do it…one day…when we’re finally free. XD

      2. LOL, yes. We’ll have to give each other updates. it’s just one of those things that you’re like, oh, I’m going to do it…but then it’s like, well, I could be reading a book instead. XD How are book fest preparations going?

      3. Booktastic! I love that word. That is everything I want this weekend to be. 🙂 I’ve been to Cali quite a few times, but I’ve never been to a book convention, so that will be a first for me!

      4. LOL, thank you. XD I tried with it. And I AM SURE IT WILL BE. You got this, and you will come home with so many book goodies and be wondrous. I’ll be glued to your Twitter page for book updates. XD But I know you will be enjoying it!

      5. YAYYYYYY! I’m so glad!! 😀 I shall eagerly be awaiting your recap if you’re doing one. 😀 I bet now it’s overwhelming to look back at all your loot and goodies. :O But YES. That would be amazing. If only they would do something right in the middle and it would be perfect. XD

        Liked by 1 person

      6. I did a mini-recap, but it’s mostly just some pics of some authors I met. The ARCs and loot are overwhelming. LOL. I need to make a spreadsheet just for those! That really would be so much fun!

        Liked by 1 person

      7. Only three carry-on suitcases and a tote bag full. No big deal. LOL. 🙂 A lot of those were signed books, but at least one suitcase and the tote bag were all ARCs and another tote bag was swag. Boon conventions are AMAZING.

      8. *faints* Um, wow there. I’m now on the hunt for tickets for next year. XD But I’m so glad it was so much fun and the goodies were plentiful! 😀 Now trying to create that schedule will be fun. I’m definitely seeing the need for the spreadsheet.

      9. Yes! You should so come. We would have a blast! Hahaha. So the picture of me with Traci Chee is me holding her book, and her holding my super OCD, color-coded spreadsheet. LOL.

      10. Yessssssss. I’ll have to start planning ahead for it. Does YALL West do it in the same place every year? And LOL, omigosh, YES. I was going to comment on that but got too distracted. I would 100% do the same thing as well.

        Liked by 1 person

      11. Oooooh I’m not sure. I’m so confused about all the book fests and I need to unconfuse myself quicker. I knew about BookCon, which does switch around so I was wondering if this one did. But good to know.

        Liked by 1 person

      12. Yes! I totally agree. Maybe like one every week? 😉 But it does! I’m hoping next year it will be in a place a little more affordable than New York. XD I almost got to go last year, but of course, I had a vacation the exact times it was supposed to be. XD

        Liked by 1 person

      13. Oh no, not New York, but a bit farther. XD But Book Con is in New York this year, and I definitely can’t afford to get my butt over there for it like I would have be able to for Chicago (which it was there last year D:). (I now realize that my comment was very confusing in the previous statement. XD Sorry! XD)

      14. Hahaha. That would be kind of funny. I mean, I’m all about taking stuff like that to locations that don’t get a ton of book events, but it would be hard to invest money on a trip somewhere weird and random.

  3. I was curious how this theme was going to go when I saw you announce it earlier in the week. While I haven’t seen The Princess and the Frog yet, I really enjoyed this post. I know the basics of the story, so this made me feel like I got to know Tiana even more. I’m not a big fan of Heartless at the moment, but I can see why Tiana would like it. There are baked goods to the gills in that book, so she might get along with Catherine?

I’ve got Frogkisser on my shelf to read. I’m a Nix fan and there’s a frog prince joke in my family, so it was natural that I would try this book. I’m glad to hear good things about it.

I can’t wait to see what you think Belle would read. 😀 I’m also looking forward to Mulan’s week.

    1. Oooh, thanks so much! 😀 But yes, Tiana is brilliant…and hopefully I didn’t do any spoilers throughout. XD But yeah, Heartless was an interesting one for me. I think I was hooked too much on the fact it was Marissa Meyer but I could definitely see where you could not be a big fan at all – but the food was quite heavenly in that book and I always walked away feeling like I needed to bake. XD
And ooooooh, it was a lot of fun! I definitely think you will enjoy. 😀
And thank you! I’m bringing out all the fierce ladies I can find for Mulan’s when she comes around. 😀 But thanks so much!! 😀

  4. Ahhh, this was such a lovely post! I am already in love with this new segment ❤
I haven't read ANY of the books you mentioned but I've put ALL of them on my TBR – hopefully they will help me feel more like Tiana and give me some of that fierceness of hers! 😉
    Can't wait for next Saturday!

      1. I did go and see it, but I somehow missed the first 15 minutes D: So I got to miss a lot of the cool new stuff. XD But Emma was a wonderful Belle and there was a lot of beautiful…imagery? I never know if that’s the right word. XD

Plus, I have yet to read a lot of those books! I got Hertless just recently and can’t wait to read it! Out of the Easy is a book that I never heard of but, the author is for shure very know so, one more added to my ginourmous TBR… 😅 I also never heard of Jackaby, but now I need to read it! 😂 And finally The Belles that just like Tiana and you, I have to pick up!!
Your post always make my life more difficult because I keep adding to my TBR! 😂

Oooooh, I definitely think you will like it, Joana. Meyer does a fabulous job with Wonderland and makes the unlikeable, likeable. And Out of the Easy is just amazing! ❤ And Jackaby is brilliant as well in this subtle way.
Aahahahah, I'm sorry, Joana! XD It's so rough on the TBR. But thanks so much – you're the best! ❤

      1. Exactly! 😍 They are both in my cart to see if the price drops 😛 Although even if it does I am pretty sure I am penniless right now 😅 I have been having a problem that I have been liking a lot of arcs and I tend to buy them after I read >.< it's not going so well x) But I will get to them!
Aww thank you!! 😍 So are you! 💜

      2. Ahahahaha oh, I know what you mean, Joana. I love when they talk about how book bloggers never buy the finished copies after reading the arcs – I’m pretty sure our bank accounts are proof of that. But yes! Can’t wait to see what you think of them when you eventually get to them. 😉
