Mini Review: A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

DNF @ …I don’t even remember. I got about 130 pages in.

Edit: it was 31%

I’m literally shaking my head as I write this post. I thought this would be the book. The book of popular love and opinion that I would agree with all the hype and fangirl just like everything. I think just a combination of a bunch of things gone wrong ended up with the perfect book storm, and it kicking my book butt.

Once Upon a Time…

When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution for it. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she only knows about from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin—one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world.

As she dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she’s been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an ancient, wicked shadow grows over the faerie lands, and Feyre must find a way to stop it . . . or doom Tamlin—and his world—forever.

So, honestly, there is nothing really wrong with this book. Honestly. The writing was good, the plot was interesting, the characters were decently captivating. I liked Feyre well enough, and Tamlin and that other guy…Lucien, maybe? Yeah, him. I thought they were interesting.

However, my biggest issue was I just couldn’t connect with it. I was about 130 pages in the story, and I literally could not care if I set it down and never picked it back up. I wanted to feel something for it, and I just couldn’t. I didn’t root for Feyre like I do most heroines, I wasn’t invested in the ship of Tamlin and Feyre, and when there was danger? I was literally like eh.

So what could have been the problem? Did I just not connect with Maas’s writing? Was the story just not interesting? Were the characters boring?

I really don’t think any of that was the problem. I think there were two – perhaps three – major things going on at the time that created the perfect DNF book storm for this.

The first being that I could see a ship forming, and I knew it wasn’t the right one. I clearly could see Tamlin and Feyre were being brought together, but I’ve seen from a million posts that Tamlin is not the guy that I should be fangirling over. I get really intense about knowing which person I have to ship over, and when I don’t? I never forgive that book (I’m looking at you, Red Queen). So I think I immediately disconnected from the feels and ship because I knew that it wasn’t the right dude.

The second being I had a lot of personal things going on at the time. I had a really terrible week that week, and I was heading into a book slump fast. I don’t think any book would have made me happy.

You’re the wrong Princess for this story, Snow, but sadly the right one for this review.

The third? I do think there was a bit to do with the book itself. Maas’s writing is very to the point. She goes from one thing to the next, and there isn’t the imagery that you get in Caraval or The Star-Touched Queen. I don’t think I connected as much with her writing as I would had it been a bit…more? You know? Ugh, I don’t even know. I’m so confused by this book.

However, even though I DNF’ed this, I somehow still want to continue with the series. I’ve heard that A Court of Mist and Fury is supposed to be amazingly good, so I might just give it a shot. Because I don’t want to shake my head at myself for not liking a book that I thought I was going to love.

Check it out:

What do you think? Do you get upset with yourself when you don’t like a book you thought you would love? Have you read this series? Is ACoMaF better? Should I try it out? Let’s discuss in the comments below!

Also, lol, “mini”. Do I even know what “mini” means?

  1. You spoke the words inside my head. I agree. I didn’t connect with any of the characters, I was kind of annoyed at Feyre, and I know I’m shipping the wrong ship if I ever shipped them because everyone is talking about Rhysand. (Eh??) And yeah, I didn’t feel anything while I was reading it. I’m glad I wasn’t alone on this one. 😀 Nice “mini” review Mandy. So honest. 😀

    1. Okay, yay Jannin for being on the same wavelength. I thought I was aloneeeeee. But yay! But yes to Rhysand! I’m like I can’t look at Tamlin if I’m supposed to be in love with Rhysand! But thank you so much, Jannin!!

  2. Not every book is for everybody and if you can’t relate to a character, that is a turn-off for me as well. I am one of those that really enjoyed this one, but I do respect that it is not everyone’s cup of tea. I hope that your next read is more enjoyable! 🙂

  3. I don’t know if you can really go into ACOMAF without reading ACOTAR. I haven’t finished it yet but I see the Ship stuff all the time and you can’t let that get to you. Things could change completely in ACOWAR!
So if you don’t like ACOTAR, I think you’ll have a hard time with ACOMAF. It’s just a lot of backstory that goes along with it. Many didn’t like the outcome of the first book, but there’s a reason we see what we see I think.
I’m the biggest supporter of you DNF’ing a book you don’t like…but I just think it will be hard to understand what’s going on in book two without all the plot in book one.
But whatever you decide, you know I’ll support it! 😊❤️😊❤️😊❤️😊❤️😊❤️😊❤️

    1. You make some brilliant points as well…my first thoughts was that I could cheat and read a super detailed summary about what happened in the bits that I missed which was my logic but…that would lose the whole feeling of it and as you said, if the big change changes everything…what exactly would happen. Stephanie = full of wisdom. I’m either going to have to pick it up again or just give up. But you gave me a lot more things to think about. XD

  4. I think the last quarter of ACOTAR is what makes it worth reading. It took me soooo long to get through too. I almost DNF’d as well. The first 3/4ths of the book is slow and like you said, Feyre is often unlikeable. But the end bit is so much better. I wasn’t on the Tamlin ship either, but the end of the book, you get new possible interests, more action and Feyre grows to be someone much more interesting I think.

    1. Okay, that’s super good to know. Maybe I will give it another try then for that. I just have to make it past the other parts. But that’s super good to know, and makes me a bit more excited about starting it again! Thanks so much!

  5. That’s exactly the problem I had with the Throne of Glass series. Book 1 and 2 had all the signs of a massive ship between the main character Caelina and the guy I was rooting for. Then everything is blown up and I’m told things are never better. That killed it for me immediately.

And that’s exactly why, as much as I’m curious about this book, I can’t bring myself to read it out of fear of being let down again.

    1. Oh dear gosh. That does not sound good at all. D: Hmmmm…maybe I’ll hold off on that for a while too. XD But I would agree because I have no clue what happens but I don’t think the ship from the first book goes to the next? Which drives me insane. D: But thank you for letting me know about Throne of Glass so I know what to expect for that…or really fear. XD

      1. Well, I hope I didn’t turn you off because it sure is beloved. I just didn’t like feeling duped. There are just some key phrases that scream endgame to me, and so after they’ve been uttered you can’t change your mind. (At least not in my rulebook.)

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Oh no! But no, not entirely, although, I do know not to get too invested even after endgame phrases. But that is kind of super drastic of a switch. But no, haven’t turned me off forever (since you did just make me more interested again since it is beloved XD).

  6. I haven’t tried this one yet but I get where you’re coming from. I feel like I already know this series inside out from everything I’ve read about it so far! And that can really affect one’s reading experience.
Nevertheless, I’m glad you’ll try ACOMAF. I’ve heard it’s so much better and has a way dreamier guy XD But won’t you get confused not reading ACOTAR first? Hmm.
Awesome review nonetheless, Mandy! Even though it wasn’t mini hahaha (I have the feeling I’ll have a similar opinion when I finally manage to get to this one by the way XD)

    1. YES. Although apparently, I never knew there was a Tamlin? XD I somehow missed that whole thing…whole character. XD But I super agree. If I hadn’t gone in knowing so much, I think I would have fared more better.
…I would indeed, Sophie, but shhhhh…my grand evil plan was going to read a detailed summary but I might be second guessing that now. XD
My mini sucks. But thanks so much, Sophie!! I really appreciate it. Hopefully you’ll have a better experience, but…still. XD

      1. I knew about him… I guess I spoiled myself in the very early days before there was even ACOMAF XD Though I’m not particularly bothered. The romance is really the only aspect I know of it hahaha Everything else will be completely new to me.
Thank you! I hope you enjoy the second book ^^ (Your evil plan shall be kept a secret, I promise!)

      2. Ahhhhhh gotcha. That is smart. Romance can be spoiled but you will never un-know major plot twists so yay for being kept away from that.
And thank you! I feel so bad for saying it. It’s like I’m cheating on a test. D:

  7. It’s too bad you didn’t like it! I get feelings like those too when I have had a rough week. Maybe you can go ahead a read a detailed summary and try ACOMAF anyways 😉 hehehe I feel pressured into reading it now because I am going to meet Maas in three months…so I guess I still have some time to decide. Hahaha “mini”!

    1. Thank you, Rendz. 😉 I think I still might. I’m not sure. I just want to be on the Maas train. XD But oooh, yeah, the pressure would for sure be on. But super yayyyyy for meeting her!! And ik. I failed so hard, but I just liked the addition of the word in there.

      1. Haha! We all want to be on the Maas train a little bit! 😉 Maybe you’ll have better luck on the next one or in her other series…though I had some trouble there (you know)! I totally see your point about her lack of much imagery, her writing is really straight to the point.

  8. Great review! I enjoyed ACOTAR but it definitely wasn’t her best work. I agree there was something missing from this book and it took me a VERY long time to connect with it at all – I’m talking not until the last 8 chapters. The only reason I persevered was because of everything I had heard about book 2. I can’t explain it but it didn’t feel like a Maas book, but ACOMAF certainly did 😀

    1. Okay, that’s super good to know. And super good to know that this wasn’t wuite like her other works. I’m definitely excited to pick up her other works, and Im slowly getting convinced to just struggle through this to mKe it to the next one. Super good to know, though!! Your insight definitely helped.

  9. I’m SOOO surprised you didn’t love a book that’s essentially a Beauty and the Beast retelling! This series is one of my all-time favs, but the second book is WAY better than the first, and I LOVED the first. 🙂 I do think Feyre can come across as whiney in this book, and I think people have a hard time connecting with her. She has a tremendous ARC though, so it ends up being SO worth it. But we can’t love ALL the same books, right?! 😉

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I KNOW. I was :O faced too, and super sad. XD But okay, that does make me feel more interested that she does have a huge ARC. Okay, Krysti, you make me want to give it a second chance. Did you like this series better than Throne of Glass or were they so different?

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Throne of Glass is one of my very favorite series, and it has been for a while. But after ACOMAF came out, this series surpassed it. At least in my opinion. 😉

      2. You’re most welcome! I would really, really encourage you to finish it and then do book two, because I have NEVER swooned harder during a book. For realz. 😍😍😍😍😍

      3. :O :O :O That sounds amazing. I’m all for that!! XD Again, you’re really full of such book wisdom. XD I’m really beginning to think that it was just the mood. There are still some big problems I have with it, but it’s just so captivating right now. XD

      4. I have not yet. D: I was going to start that one first and then work my way to ACOTAR, but it just seemed to go. And I supposed to borrow them all from my friend, but she hasn’t read them yet so I have to wait. XD Is it a whole different kind of feel?

        Liked by 1 person

      5. Yeah, the MC of that series is my all time FAV. But the love interest in this series is my all time FAV. I adore ToG so much! I can’t wait to fangirl over it with you!

      6. ALSO. I forgot…although I have no clue how I forgot since I just finished it. BUT I FINISHED IT. You were sooooo right. It got so much better. Literally the moment I picked up from where I left off it super picked up. I admit I gave it three crowns, but it actually is the best three crowns I gave. Thank you for getting me back into it because I simply have to hunt down number 2 because I can tell I’m going to be into it.

  10. Great review! Finally, someone who doesn’t think this book is the best thing since sliced bread! I didn’t connect with the characters. The story wasn’t all that compelling to me either. I also wasn’t a fan of ACOMAF despite everyone alive absolutely loving it. If you don’t like ACOTAR then I don’t think you would like the sequel, although, you never know. I’ve often disliked first books only to fall in love with sequels. Sadly, this series wasn’t one of those. Also, I agree about Maas’ writing. It’s not as magical and descriptive as others. I think it works for her, though.

    1. It’s very rate to find someone that does feel like that. I felt so alone until I found you mentioning it and one other bloggers. But that’s super good to know. I’ve heard a lot of reviews it got better, but it’s super interesting you mentioned you didn’t find it got better. I definitely agree that it does work for her. Sometimes you just don’t need the flowery stuff. Thanks so much, though, Angelica! We can be in the same boat together!! 😀

      1. Yeah, at least we aren’t alone! As for the book, the characters do get better, I just didn’t like ACOMAF. It’s over 600 pages of nothing. It was a very character driven book, to the point that I honestly can’t even tell you the plot of that book, it dragged in my opinion. It was a filler book. I also wasn’t a huge fan of the characters. Fyre acts like a special snowflake and they make one character look like a saint basically by making another one look like a monster. I just wasn’t a fan. Still, you might like it. I hope you enjoy it more than me!

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Ahahahaha oh goodness. With character driven novels, it is so hard to pull off because you don’t like the characters, then it’s a total turn-off and if you do, you love it. But that’s really good to know since that might help me decide whether or not to continue. I’m still debating. XD But seriously, this was so helpful to hear from you. 😀

  11. I absolutely swear by this series. I guess its harder when you already see stuff on tumblr etc so the plot twists would have been ruined a bit. I had the same exact problem with Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments. (Plus the writing I found terrible amongst many other problems)

    1. After this post was posted, I did get convinced to pick it up again and I actually really did enjoy. I think the spoilers really did ruin the first bit for me, but I can see where the love comes from because it was quite good by the end. And LOL, yes, that is not a series I have a real desire to read. There are sooo many spoilers out for that one…and yeah, the writing can be a bit iffy as well. But thanks for the insight! 😀 😀
