Release date: February 14, 2017

*I was provided an ARC thanks to a lovely Goodreads contest, but it in no way changes my view!*

I feel guilty. Guys and gals, I really do.

Because I didn’t like this book. I couldn’t even bring myself to finish it let enough get past three chapters. And there are soooooo many people that are so excited for this in the blogging community, and I feel so guilty for not liking this. D:

Anyway, let’s start off with the basics (with a little help from my friend, Goodreads):

Not all are free. Not all are equal. Not all will be saved.

Our world belongs to the Equals — aristocrats with magical gifts — and all commoners must serve them for ten years. But behind the gates of England’s grandest estate lies a power that could break the world.

A girl thirsts for love and knowledge.

Abi is a servant to England’s most powerful family, but her spirit is free. So when she falls for one of the noble-born sons, Abi faces a terrible choice. Uncovering the family’s secrets might win her liberty, but will her heart pay the price?

A boy dreams of revolution.

Abi’s brother, Luke, is enslaved in a brutal factory town. Far from his family and cruelly oppressed, he makes friends whose ideals could cost him everything. Now Luke has discovered there may be a power even greater than magic: revolution.

And an aristocrat will remake the world with his dark gifts.

He is a shadow in the glittering world of the Equals, with mysterious powers no one else understands. But will he liberate—or destroy?

I really don’t know where the disconnect happened for me with this book. It had a fantastic premise, an interesting bunch of characters, and the writing was decent enough. This is one of those books that definitely makes you use your mind to keep with all the twists and turns, and it has a fantastically bad villain as a main character. Yay, right? Maybe?

snow-white
I’m sad to see you, Snow…you don’t look very sad at all.

Anyway, all of these elements really should have worked. However, they just fell flat for me. I started this book on Christmas, and I finally gave up on it on January 17th. That’s a lot of days where I tried to pick it up but had to give up after a few pages or I would stare at it, knowing I need to pick it up and finish it and…just couldn’t. Nor did I want to. At all.

I think perhaps where the drawbacks came was not just because of its general boringness to me was the multiple POVs. There were too many early on with not enough connection to them, and it just made me use my brain too much. There were a lot of concepts, a lot of changes to the everyday world, and just…I couldn’t wrap my head around it, and that is perhaps where the majority of my disconnect came from.

So, I feel guilty. I really wanted to like this book. I wanted to love it and fangirl over it and cry over it. I just can’t. It’s kind of sad when the most exciting thing about the whole ordeal is the cool spinning there they sent you with the ARC where you hold two springs on the side of the circle piece, and while spinning it, you saw a bird in and out of the cage.

Sorry?

No rating since I didn’t get too far into it (about 15%), and a Snow White rating!

Check it out:

What do you think? Have you read Gilded Cage? Do you want to? Do you ever feel book guilt over hating a book or not finishing one that you know a lot of people want to read?

      1. This is the first actual review I’ve read on it. all I’ve seen so far are people posting about the cover, which is lovely. Not sure if I’ll pick this one up or not. 🤔

      2. You’re very right about not seeing many reviews! I think I’ve seen two…and the only reason I found them was because I was actively looking for one and just stumbled upon another. It might be good for a library book…but then again, I wouldn’t recommend so…I just always feel bad making a person not want to read something. XD

      3. Yeah, I always do too when I give less than stellar reviews, but I guess that’s part of why people read book blogs, to help them decide what to read. 😊

      4. I haven’t gotten that one or my Windwitch swag yet. Hopefully soon. I did get an email that we should be getting the Divergent novellas soon for preordering Carve the Mark.

      5. Lol, okay, good. I did that to another blogger recently, and I’m now paranoid about doing that again. XD The good thing about loving books is you can always hide your mortification behind a book. XD

  1. Oh no! Sorry you didn’t like this book. A lot of POVS is one of my pet peeves, it’s just so hard to connect to any of the characters. This was one of my most anticipated releases of 2017 and I feel like I owe it to myself to at least try it 😂 But I’ll definitely be cautious going into it. Great review!

    1. It is! I think it was just too much, too fast for me. You definitely might like it, since I really do feel like a lot of people could. But yes, now that you know about the ton of POVs all in the beginning, you may be good! Hopefully you will enjoy it more than me! And thank you! 🙂

  2. Oh no! That’s too bad you didn’t like this book. I really like it. I rated 5 stars! It’s really unique, unlike other books I have read and I like that aspect of it. The twists makes it such an adrenaline rush for me. Silyen is so mysterious. The oldest brother with an ugly attitude but have an internal battle of his own because of the pressure he receives from his dad. The girl he’s engaged to, she’s so wicked and greedy that it’s just so interesting to read. You will have to give it a try again.. unless you don’t like books with no humor because yeah, this book is pretty serious.

    1. I think I just couldn’t get into the beginning part…and I actually do like my humor. Perhaps that is where I went wrong, lol. But okay, you kind of made me want to read it again, so I definitely might have to pick it up again with that description. I won’t give up as much hope now. But good to know about the humor thing ahead of time.

      1. Abby likes the middle brother with no power/skills and there’s that forbidden love come into play. Luke is in this club that oppose this divide between slave and non-slave. It’s actually an interesting ride.. haha..

  3. I haven’t read it but I have the ARC too. I think it sounds like it could be good, but you can’t force a book either. You click or you don’t, and there’s nothing wrong with that. It can always be a book you pick up and read a bit here or there.
I had a book called 1Q84 by Murakami, and everyone told me that it was just awesome. I pushed myself so hard that I ended up hating Reading for awhile. Like, seriously. I stopped at 34%. I just didn’t enjoy it.
So read what you love! Who knows? Maybe you’re just not in the mood for it now! 😘

    1. I don’t think I ever heard it said so nicely before. It definitely makes me feel so much better about it. I was feeling super guilty, but as you said, maybe it was mood, maybe it just didn’t click. So wonderfully said, and that has got to be a reader’s worst nightmare you push yourself so much that you actually hate reading. D:

      1. Exactly! You read what you feel like…if it doesn’t jive, then it doesn’t jive. You don’t want to dread reading. I know the next one you read will be better (oh wait…wasn’t that Princess of Tyrone? 😉)
I tried to read a book called Slumber that a lot of people liked…I hated it! I stopped at 11% and just can’t keep going! 🤷‍♀️

      2. Lol, it was indeed which turned out to be a total gem. ❤ I feel like I have heard of it. Sometimes I feel like the pressure is just on to read stuff people like and then like it yourself. XD

      3. Oh it sure is! I’ve read stuff and rated it kinda meh and ppl are like, ohh I’m sorry you didn’t like it, I thought it was awesome! And then you’re like, well it WAS pretty good I guess…or the other way around. You love it and others hate it, you know?

      4. Yep! I’m so glad you feel the same way!
With Vassa in the Night, I really didn’t like it. But so many people did that I started to think that maybe I liked it and didn’t know it? You know? I felt like my rating was wrong. Then I found others that didn’t like it and I didn’t feel so weird.
I’ve seen others DNF this book. So it’s not just you. Recently it’s been this one and Wintersong, which freaks me out because I have been looking forward to reading both! 🙀

      5. LOL. I do that a lot as well. But oh gosh for Vassa since I plan to read that later on this year. D:
I keep seeing stuff for Wintersong, too, and it’s super scary! I have been looking forward to it as well, and now I’m bit scared. D: But sorry for freaking you out with this one. I have seen a few other ones too that finally made me DNF it seeing that I wasn’t the only person. XD

  4. I actually liked this book a lot. 😅 It was complex and really fun to unravel. Maybe you’re in the mood for some fluff romance😂 Pick it up again when you’re in the mood for it. 👌

    1. That could have been. Sometimes you really just have to be in a super intense mood for books like this, but I will definitely keep that in mind! It makes me feel better that you enjoyed it and maybe I will definitely pick it up again. 😀
